Manual: cannot switch to 2nd gear sometimes, anyone else?

Featured Replies

Hi chaps, an issue since collecting the car has been dragging on and curious if anyone else has it or is it just me.

When the car is moving very slowly, like 12-15kmh, mostly from a higher gear that has been disengaged, if I try to put second (from neutral) sometimes it just doesn`t want to switch. I have to depress the clutch, try third and then go to 2nd to have it go in. I notice in these cases the shift lever appears to move further to the left like for the reverse. This has happened like 7 or 8 times so far but it did on a busy crossroad and I think I was lucky noone hit me. I`ve got like 7k km on the car so far.

Hello MP, please can you clarify if you have manual or DSG gearbox?

Says it in the topic name. Also, DSG won`t require me to depress the clutch :)

Possibly something in the selector lever (even something like badly cut out hole in the carpet) or not aligning correctly in the gate (alignment needs fixing).   Dealer should fix these under warranty as clearly a manufacturing defect.

Could be a synchromesh problem in the gearbox if it is shifting down from third easier than up from 1st into second gear.

All rather a guess, based on description

I have occasionally found that when I push the gear lever into 3rd (mine's also a manual box) it sometimes doesn't want to go all the way and I get that horrible grinding noise when the gear is not fully engaged.  Have to drop to neutral and give it a firmer push to get it in properly.

It's not all the time, and is probably just me getting lazy at gear shifts from time to time.  Car has just over 37,000 miles on it now so should be worn in!

I see a lot of similar comments (what I am experiencing) on VW forums. Rough 1st and 2nd. I did play with it and discovered that if you apply very modest force, the lever goes farther to the left and into something that prevents it going down to 2nd. It can go up to 1st but cannot go down to 2nd. I think dealer should inspect and readjust, seems to me as not preset well in the factory.

Indeed I should have gone for a DSG, the manual is horrible to drive. I thought it is just me, as autoexpress said it is a joy to drive, but looking at the VW forums - absolutely the same issues as with my car are reported by others.

Earlier Octavia manual models had a process to reset the gear selection mechanism.

Borrowed this video from the Skoda Octavia Guides

Hi, I have a 2022 manual Octatvia 4 and I'm having the exact same issue.  For a long time now changing to 2nd, especially from 3rd to 2nd if often just won't go in.  You'd have to dip the clutch and try a couple of times to get the gear.  Well today it just won't go in at all, even from 1st.  I have mentioned this to Skoda on the numerous occasions the car has gone in for other (software) issues.  They say they can't find anything. They say it might me the synchros.  I don't think it is  it seems like the selector mechanism is not properly adjusted or somthing has slipped out of place.  So it's back to Skoda AGAIN tomorrow.  This should not be happening on a new car!

Did you ever get a resolution to this?

Kind of but not from the dealer. If you switch the gears gently and slower than usual (I have a tendency to push the lever fast) it works ok - not great but ok. If you apply any modest amount of force, however, it still remains stuck. I expect to have the car back from the dealer these days and will ask and demonstrate. Indeed, because of this issue I barely avoided a collision while trying to cross a busy traffic light as it happened in the middle of the crossroad.

And you`re right - should not be like this on a new car. Indeed now I`d anytime take a used proper car than a new Skoda.

Oh that made me laugh out loud 😄

I had complained to them on rough switching into 1st and less pronounced on 2nd. Was going to bring it up but now its fine, also feeling a bit firmer. Perhaps you should go talk to them to readjust whatever is required. If i have to be honest, mine feels as if they put different oil in it but its just a feeling.

I can still make it get kind of stuck but it requires a good push to do so and if you push down it would go but rough.

Got cold and few months had passed. Back to old state - rough switch to 1st and 2nd and sometimes 2nd won`t go in. Piece of ****.

Hi all,

I have recently purchased a 2020 Octavia, 1.5tsi. 28k Milage (manual).  Car is now out of manufacturer warranty, but I've purchased second-hand from an independent garage so my issues all go via them with my consumer rights in mind.

The obvious issue is with 4th gear, is doesn't always find it. It will land somewhere between 4th and Neutral (it seems) and then the gear stick will judder.  This isn't every change, maybe 1 in 20. I haven't fully sussed any particular patterns.

Ive very recently had the car back from the garage, who have supposedly fixed the syncros involved.  It's deffo smoother and it's clear they've lubricated things but finding 4th gear isnt guaranteed still and the issue occurred on my short commute to work this morning. Its clear this happens more often when the car has warmed up.

Can anyone help? Is a new transmission required or should I suggest the linkages are also looked into?

Thanks in advance

Any news on the fix, please?

Hi Paul, Did you have any luck getting this resolved?

Its a quite possibly a different issue to yours - others have reported issues with switching 2nd on a brand new car, no one has complained of 4th. Indeed 3rd and 4th are pretty butter like on mine.

Wild guess but sounds like a syncro problem - these are relatively small on the upper gears so could likely be a damaged part.

Have exactly the same issue. Switching from first to second or third to second.. Kind of got used to it by finding a perfect spot while shifting but now I'm sick of it. It's not even a 2 year old car.

So I went to dealers and scheduler a repair in May. They said they need to open the car and then they'll see what's busted but for sure it's recognized as a problem. They mentioned gear shaft, gearbox.. My eyes popped out. Car would presumably be fixed in a week.

Will keep you posted.

Update from my side. Skoda fixed. It was a 3 week repair due to waiting process for the parts to come from fabric.

In the end, it was a factory error in the shifter box. 3 gears and synchroniser were faulty enough to give me a tough shifting experience.

They said they never saw that before in kodiaq, but hey, they could have said anything.

Not happy with the fault but at least I got it sorted under warranty.

Shifts well now.
