Automatics ......

Featured Replies

It is NOT a choice for me but a necessity. (I would have one anyway tho).

Having had the Octy DSG since FEB 2011 and it not putting a foot wrong so far, I would certainly not hesitate to have another.

However, considering that a different manufacturer may not have a DSG equipped vehicle, are there any other Auto's (by manufacturer / car type) that you would, or wouldn't recommend ???

Car is likely to be somewhere between 2016 and possibly up to 2020. As @Aspman, I've been promising myself a newer car for about 6 yrs now. Wish I'd have bought one back then .... prices are so extortionate to date.

Thanks.

Renault EDC 7 speed there or thereabout similar to the 7 speed dry clutch DSG.

Had couple of 6 speed Wet DSG in SEATs and Skoda, OK but not great on fuel.

Jag ZF box good in my  Type S Jag and great in BMW especially with 8 speed.

Merc 9 speed box they use is the one I have been in a car with probably the best.

Arkana with 7 speed EDC fairly good, little snatch at take off, Coasting feature great as it was in my Octy, if not a little weird.   Good value car, built in Korea.

Not yet convince in the ETECH system which sound better in the Austral with turbo engine and 5 speed, plus two electric gears, rather than only 4 ICE gears on ETECH Arkana, Capture, Clio.

Skodas, or any VAG, not so good value or as relatively well made to far east cars.  Electrics are about to make all ICE cars look costly to run as they fall in price by 10 to 20% a year at present and cost half as much to run and they are all automatics of course !

@Tilti  drive only automatics / 2 pedal cars and have since the 1970's.

This past week i have driven 4 Automatic demonstrators, 2 DSG's, a a wet and dry 7 speed, a Renault Hybrid 6 speed and a Toyota Hybrid e-CTV.

Like every other one i have driven from the past years they were great and do what that are supposed to do,

The only poor box i have driven in recent years were VW Up!MiiCitigo ASG's.

If i was to buy a keeper now i might give VW Group DQ381's a miss.

80,000 service interval is OK, but then there is a filter to change and VW Group say no.  & there is no way i would be leaving the Oil or Oil & Filter anything like 80,000 miles

and i would want a Warranty covering it.

PS

Maybe avoid 1.5TSI ACT's.    Look at the cost of Cambelt changes @ 5 years.

.....................

For a real costly vehicle to maintain at 5 years on..

A 1.5 TSI / ACT with Haldex & DQ381.

If you like the DSG 'feeling' but wanted to go away from VAG, I believe Kia/Hyundai also do a DSG style box (albeit called a DCT).

Not too convinced on what Kia/Hyundai are putting out at the moment. My mate's got a Sportage and it's on it's second engine at <50k.

@StevesTruckIs it under 5 years old?

It's about 2 years old.
