Very noisy at idle - warm engine

Featured Replies

HI all,

I have just purchased a used Skoda Fabia 2016, 1.2 90 hp.

It is really noisy at idle when the engine is warm. the dealer told it is the fuel pump or something like that - do you have the same? or is the dealer trying to run from their responsibility?

Welcome.

Sorry no idea, someone with better hearing will be along.

What is the Dealers responsibility?

What does the dealer intend doing if it is the fuel pump, are they saying 'They all make that noise' ?

Have you got a Warranty with the car?

?

How many miles has it done, and is the servicing good, fixed annual servicing or variable, and what oil is in now, is it to VW 504 00 / 504 00,  so 5w 30 FS III or 0w 30 FS III

or could it be 0w 20 FS IV that was used,  VW508 00 / 509 00 ?

PS.

Cam belt change interval in the UK is at 5 years if getting done to the manufacturers guidelines /recommendation.

Spark plugs @ 4 years / 40,000 miles, or at least need looking at, and if looked at as well replaced.

My wife's 2015 Fabia 1.2 TSI 90 engine bay makes all sorts of different noises at different times, I assume it's the VW computer programs doing their various good (or evil) operations but it's not quite as noisy as that (not that we have the bonnet open normally) and without so much of that high pitched whine.

If it's the fuel pump or something like that then it doesn't sound good to me - what mileage is the car (having low mileage can sometimes be worse than having high mileage), my wife's cars is at 52,000 miles.

As put what service, maintenance and repairs history do you have on the car, engine oil & filter changes are not even a full engine service let alone a full whole-car service.

Again I don't know what the noise(s) are, others might be along that do, but I'd not accept that and be bouncing the car back to the dealer.  This car (model) and cars in general, can have enough problems without starting with those you might have.  Do not fall for the over hyped 'German engineering quality' being good, often now it isn't and that goes for the likes of VW VAG group of companies and BMW and Mercs, this ain't the last century.

Thanks a lot, the dealer will take another look on it next week. It is still under the warranty we get when we buy a used car.

the said the high pressure fuel pump make some rattle noise, and that is how it is designed.

But the high pitch noise might be some bearings. I guess the should take a look at the cam belt.

Thanks a lot.

It has done 80.000 kms and i got a service book of the previous services that has been done on the car.

I don’t know what oil is on now though.

My 2016 1.2 TSI does NOT make that noise.

Car at 70 K miles / 110 K Kms.

Thanks. AG Falco

I'm not convinced that it is out of the ordinary noise wise.

Listening to it a second time it doesn't seem as bad but my wife's 2015 with only 2,000 miles more on it does not sound like that as far as I know.  Perhaps it is the audio recording or position of microphone that gives the sound but as a new car to me I would return it to the Dealer to sort.

There are so many possibilities, the engines are certainly not the sweetest sounding and as I put I hear all sorts of noises as I guess the computer is doing its stuff.

I would try with the engine warmed at idle to see if there are any differences to the sound when getting a glamorous assistant to give the engine various revs, at idle turn the aircon and blower on at the various settings, aircon off loads of electric items on.  One noise might cover another but it is free and easy to try, any significant difference or increase in rattle or whine I would record on the phone for the Dealer and tell him what was done to get that difference.

For service history does it include changes of air filter, spark plugs, air-con, car battery, brake fluid, tyres, brakes?
