More vRS tyre musings!

Featured Replies

VI vRS petrol manual owner here sitting at 18k. Front grip from OE Goodyear Eagles has always been terrible in all weathers .. but bear in mind I’ve been spoilt in Quattros for last 6 years so might be unjustly critical.

I’m sitting on the fronts at about 2.5-3mm and have just ordered a pair of front Michelin pilot sport 4s tyres … tell me I’ve done the right thing? What are others using?

PS4s is an old model and has been replaced by the PS5, although the PS5 model might not be available in all sizes yet.

40% more

Not only do the below 19" tyres cost over 40% more than the below 17" tyres, but the below 19" rims weigh over 40% more than the below 17" rims.

@Zedboy is that Quattros or quattros that you were spoilt by?

Are they 225/40 R19 size

The new Michelin Pilot Sport 5 is generally cheaper than remaining stocks of the older Pilot sport 4S

If you find the grip is poor in bad weather, then summer tyres are not the way to go, as they often grip poorly in wet below +10c (and rain in UK is usually below this temperature 8-9 months a year).   Would All year (all season) tyres be better

Some incorrect information in the replies.

The Michelin Pilot Sport 5 is the replacement for the Pilot Sport 4, not the Pilot Sport 4S.

Michelin have just launch the Pilot Super Sport 5, which is the replacement for the Pilot Sport 4S.

So old Vs new

PS4 > PS5

PS4S > PSS5

Anyway, the PS4S is a great tyre but performance orientated so may not be optimal in the wet, but excellent in the dry.

The below five Michelin Pilot Sport Super tyres are all UUHP Ultra Ultra High Performance tyres.

As you can see below, the first two versions of the Pilot Sport tyres were Super, but weren't actually called Super...presumably because Michelin didn't do different versions of the Pilot Sport at that time. What happened was that when the Michelin Pilot Sport 3 came out it became a softer, less track focused and more rounded tyre. After the Michelin PS3 came the PS4 and then the PS5.

To answer the OP's question, what is best depends what you want out of the tyres. The tester on tyrereviews recommends a Michelin Primacy+ over the Michelin UHP tyres for his dad who drives an Octavia VRS because he would benefit more from the quieter and more comfortable ride that a  premium touring tyre gives.

The History of Michelin Pilot Sport Super

1997 Michelin Pilot Sport

2004 Michelin Pilot Sport 2

2011 Michelin Pilot Sport Super

2017 Michelin Pilot Sport 4 Super

2023 Michelin Pilot Sport Super 5

How Michelin should have named the above, ie. they are all Super

1997 Michelin Pilot Sport Super 1 (PSS1)

2004 Michelin Pilot Sport Super 2 (PSS2)

2011 Michelin Pilot Sport Super 3 (PSS3)

2017 Michelin Pilot Sport Super 4 (PSS4)

2023 Michelin Pilot Sport Super 5 (PSS5)

Sadly just the one! A lovely 3:0 Audi, but with a DSJ box that I never got one with, hence back in a manual

@Zedboywhat i meant was the capital Q for a Quattro or just Audi quattro as in the same as having haldex.

Like these s-tronics which are just a DSG, or a TFSI which is a TSI but with a premium charged for a 'F'.

Sadly that's not accurate, the S4/RS4/S5/RS5 (and others) quattro versions didn't have haldex they had Torsen. So quattro does not mean haldex.

Thanks.  If full time AWD then sorry.  So they have the 'quattro' system and 'quattro' badges but are not a Quattro.

Correct, there's only one Quattro - all the other Audi AWD vehicles are quattro with either Torsen or haldex (haldex if transverse engine and, until recently, Torsen if longitudinal engine).

If it is not a silly question, why did the Op wait until the front tyres were worn until 2.5mm then opt for different tyres front and back

Would it not have been better to swap the fronts to back when they had 4 - 4.5mm then bought a set of matching tyres at a later date

You can't really have ultra high performance tyre and a tyre that works well on hot dry days, and icy rain.   If ultimate grip is a requirement, really need to be looking at seasonal tyres.

Each to their own, I suppose

The PS 4 is the forerunner of the PS 5 not the PS 4S which will be replaced by the PS s 5. The PS 4S is a much better performance tyre with excellent grip in all conditions but not the most dynamic feeling. Have a look at Tyre Reviews on Youtube

Many thanks - one week in and I love them. Big improvement from OE - thanks a lot for replying

Fronts down to 4 - 4.5mm, perfect time to switch them to the back

Will even out wear, and defer the day when you need to think about changing them again.

I put on Goodyear Assymetric 5 on my aftermarket wheels for summer and the grip is excellent. I think you're just expecting too much, fwd with that much power is just the limiting factor. Most top tyre brands will perform within margin of error.

Oh that’s really interesting!

My previous Superb L&K 4x4 280 came with Potenza S001s and I tried Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tyres and they really did not suit the car at all. The Potenza S001s felt so much more sure footed.

I’ve now owned an Octavia VRS estate for three months now and really love the Potenza S005s but I’m wondering, after your post, if it’s worth trying the Michelins again! What’s the thoughts on this people?

Two wet weeks on and I’m delighted with the Michelins. Significantly more grip than OE and better ride too. Very happy customer

My friend has just put Michelin PS 5 on his 2021 Octi VRS and he loves them.

I've also got some traction issues with the stock tires. Bridgestone potenza s005 and using launch control is useless.

So much wheel slip that there's no point on even trying to launch the car 😛

But also since its a PHEV, i'd like to keep my electric range.

I have the 2.0tdi VRS and same tcs lights up when leaving some junctions now and again

What make and type (brand and name) does your car have ?

My car (not an Octavia), I managed to do that with a 1.0tsi DSG (in normal not sport) when damp and cold.  I subsequently bought set of winter wheels and tyres which I use early November until late April, never been able to spin them since.  You are using wrong tyres for the weather.

The factory usually fits Eco biased summer tyres, which due to their compounds designed to save fuel in WLTP tests (at warm temperatures), tend to be far to hard, and poor in the wet below about +10c.   They are not all year tyres.
