Switching from 215 55 17 to 225 50 17 tires for SUPERB III 2021

Featured Replies

Hello dear forum members,
I have 225 50 17 tires left over from my old passat, they are almost brand new. If I use these instead of the 215 55 17 tires on my Superb vehicle, will I have a problem other than the difference in wear and fuel? Will there be friction with wheel arch while turning?
Thanks  a lot in advance, good night.

They have a slightly smaller diameter so your Speedo with be out a little. In a safe direction though as it'll read hi.

Assuming you fit them to the same wheels I believe you'll be fine. The tyre will be 5mm closer to the suspension which will be the most risky bit.

@MarkyG82 Thank you so much for the answer, and yes, I will use same wheels for tyres, hope that 5mm wont make any problems in long distance travels as well.

225/50R17 will have more clearance than the standard 235 options, ie. 235/45R18 and 235/40R19. So there is no risk of rubbing.

However, there are two different 17" rim specifications that the Superb MK3 uses. 6.5Jx17 ET41 and 7Jx17 ET40.

The narrower 6.5Jx17 ET41 appears to be more common than the wider 7Jx17 ET40.

The 225/50R17 tyre size is best fitted to the wider 7J rim width, as shown in the ETRTO chart below. Notice that the standard rim width for the much narrower 205/50 tyre size is 6.5J, so it's best to fit a 225/50 to a 7J rim width.

ETRTO approved rim widths

205/50 5.5-6.5-7.5
215/50 6.0-7.0-7.5
225/50 6.0-7.0-8.0

@CarlstonI really do appreciate for the details, now I see it better. The funny thing about wheels is, I will use Seat Leon FR 2021 wheels, dont ask why it's a long story :). Wheels are in my basement I didn't checked them yet, but I did some research and the wheels are probably 7.5J size, and I used the tyres on that wheels for about 3000km on my old VW passat. For 7.5j, 225 would be slightly narrower I assume, but it wont be a big problem I guess.
Thanks again.

As you can see in the chart below, the range of approved rim widths for any given tyre width varies depending on the aspect ratio.

ETRTO approved rim widths

225/60 6.0-6.5-8.0

225/55 6.0-7.0-8.0

225/50 6.0-7.0-8.0
225/45 7.0-7.5-8.5
225/40 7.5-8.0-9.0
225/35 7.5-8.0-9.0
