In short a screw is lost behind the black plastic trim and rolls around when the tailgate is raised or lowered. 

Does the trim simply pull off? 

For anyone who needs to know, the tailgate trim pulls off easily using a timber wedge but you need to carefully realign the fixing clips with the slots in the tailgate when refitting as they are prone to moving when the trim is pulled off. 😁
