Car has been stood a while.

Featured Replies

Hi all,

my fabia has been stood for a while. I had an RTC in December and it’s been in my garage ever since. I bought a new one after waiting for so long for insurers. (Circumstances)

As expected the battery was dead, replaced with a new one.

however my gear stick seems to be a  stuck, but not completely. It seems to be refusing to shift into reverse, 1, 2 & 5.

the car at first was refusing to budge, I presume this was the car trying to drive in 3rd gear at idle. But after working with the wheels and a few revs. All was okay ish.

my wheels were completely seized , they wouldn’t rotate so I jacked them up and gave the back two drums and front discs a good whack and they’re ok now.

my issue is with the gear shifts, the car is responding way better now but I don’t want to overwork it.

I was wondering if anyone has been in a similar situation, and could tell me things to look out for? I’m presuming in regards to the gear shifts, the transmition fluid needs changing. Is this normal after been stood for 5 months?

is there any other things I should look out for?

thanks

Linkages could be stiff. That's all I can think of. However, I'll probably be proven wrong, as I'm not 100% sure.

Any input is appreciated mate. I know it’s nothing that’s completely gone and expensive, so that’s a bit of relief.

On what sort of mileage?

As changing gear oil is normally a very inexpensive and reasonably easy job to do it wouldn't hurt but you might be better if it's possible and worth the effort to try to clean and lubricate any bit of the gear linkage yo can just to easy things.

Are you sure it's the gears and not anything to do with the clutch sticking. either way actually driving the car some distance a few times over a few days getting the engine, gearbox everything else on the car thoroughly warmed and and operating should help to loosen everything up again.

Personally prior to testing and use I'd lubricate anything I can, with GT85 as it's also a good penetrating/releasing fluid as well as lubricant that contain PTFE and works well on a wide range of materials and uses, and then operate what has just been lubricated a good number of times to work it in and work the item.  Anything with an electric motor, like wiper and door windows I would have the engine running whilst operating to ensure full power and speed.  You could also use the GT85 to lubricate the rubber side window strips that the door glass runs against when raising and lowering to also help.

I'm not surprised about the battery or brakes but am about the gears (unless it's clutch) in only 5 months but we don't know any other history of the car and winters now tend to be milder and damper so condensation seems to be more prevalent in my experience where I am in the middle of the country.

Gear linkage is seized, most people never evn lubricate this part as when you don't use it for a while this happens, you need to get under the bonnet and look at the right side of the engine looking from the front then you will see the linkage coming from near the bulkhead to the gear box, then you see a small swivel like joint this part needs some lubrication, try and use a rubber friendly spray or oil give it a spray wait a bit then try again keep trying but don't force it as you will alter the settiing and never get the correct gears again until it's re-set from scratch

Been adjusting the gear linkage all morning. It seems to be the selector is not doing its job. I have sprayed some silicon lube in places, but the selector is quite relucting in moving up and down. The locking pin also doesn’t seem to budge past 45 degrees. Very odd!
