Ignition key removal not detected?

Featured Replies

Hi Guys

I've done a search without a huge amount of success - I'm wondering whether anyone has any ideas on this one:

The car is a 2011 2.0 TFSI vRS with about 130k miles

When I remove the key from the ignition barrel, the radio no longer switches off by itself and I can't lock the car with the remote, but can activate the central locking with the key.

The first time it did it, it worked on a second attempt, but now it seems to be a hard fault.

If anyone has experienced the same symptoms and found a solution, it'd be great to hear about it!

Many thanks in advance

Chris

Check the barrel is returning fully with a click, you may just have a dirty mechanism and cleaning the key and squirting some WD-40 into the lock will free it off.

Thanks Mic - that was my first instict actually - it does make a definite click sometimes, but even then it isn't working.

WD40 didn't work immediately 😔

When you remove the key does the barrel make a definite clonk?

If not just prod it a little with the key and it'll maybe spring to the off position.

Sometimes it does and sometimes it doesn't. It seemed like it may depend on whether or not I'd turned the key. In any case I can't seem to affect it by wiggling the key. Also, even when it does go with a clonk, the radio still stays on 😞

Update: Removing the switch, dismantling, cleaning contacts and reassembling has solved the problem (for now).

Cheers
