The heat is on!

Featured Replies

Phewy, hot weather the last few days huh?!

Had a long run in the VRs yesterday, engine bay was EXTREMELY hot afterwards, came back to the car 4 hours later and it seemed to be even hotter!

PD engines don't cool down very quick do they? or is it just me?

I've noticed this on my TDI as well.

I can leave it at 90 (normal temp), come back 4 hours later and it will quickly be back at normal again when I restart it.

Presumably it's down to the mass of the engine block, being a diesel?

I think you're probably right, mine was sizzling, i would have fried bacon on it but i had already eaten a large pie for dinner

In which case "Manifold Destiny" might be up your street - it's small booklet about cooking in your engine bay:eek:  .

It is sadly very old and out of print - if anyone has a copy let me know!

Sounds like an essential read! Next time i take the VRs out in the heat i may invite my friends over for a barbecue! No danger of uncooked food - it's like a hot plate in there even after a couple of hours of inactivity!

When we had the old Astra (nice accessible manifold) we used to stop at a service station, shove some pasties wrapped in foil on the manifold, then drive to the next service station, and they'd be cooked! :D

Ahhh, good old Ginsters. Available in every shop in Devon I reckon.

Sad but true - I once drove 120 miles to Hayle in Cornwall one rainy Monday morning just to buy a couple of pasties from (what was) the best pasty bakery around. Ate one and drove back home again, aquaplaning along the A30 with a nice warbling VR6 engine for company.:D

Phelps Bakery

And Jason....Ginsters.....okay if nothing else is on offer...... and they sponsor the Green Slime :thumbdwn:

That's dedication for you!

I often drive to Sidmouth from Taunton whjen I am there visiting family to get a Chinese from (higher) Temple St in Sidmouth! They do a dish called 'Kung Po chicken' and it really is the best thing ever.

I think the Chinese is called 'Top Wok' although I am unsure as it's been 2 years since I last visited.

Ginsters pasties are ok in a pie emergency but I tend to go for proper bakery ones where at all possible.

West End Bakery in North Petherton are very good. We used to use them as a supplier when we owned corner shops in Bridgwater & Puriton

I seem to remember Top Gear cooking some food on a couple of engines as a feature in one of their earlier shows. IIRC, the turbocharged Subaru flat four in the Forester was a firm favourite

I'll have to check that out.

Do they have a retail counter? Was thinking along the lines of a visit on TSR Rolling road day! My Golf has to go into Irvines that day too to sort out a lumpy idle.

^ It's just down the road from Irvines Skoda Bridgwater, literally! Travelling from Bridgwater to Taunton, West End Bakery is about 70 yards after the Walnut Tree Inn on the main road through North Petherton, where the road curves to the left and dips down a little.

It does have a retail counter.

As for the Chinese in Sidmouth, it is adjacent to the Spar shop on Temple St.

If you get to the Cinema you have gone too far into the town centre (there is another Chinese past the Cinema also on Temple St, next to a mini-roundabout, but that one isn't as good).

This Kung Po chicken is like Sweet and Sour (battered) but a little bit of chili in the sauce to give it a kick.

Mouth's watering already!
