Octavia Mk II 1.9 BXE knocking/ticking noise

Featured Replies

Hello Guys,

I hope somebody could help me. I looked for another such topic, but I did not find the same problem.

I have a problem with my Octavia. Engine: 1.9 BXE, 2007.  The problem only occurs in the morning after 2-3 minutes after starting. A knocking/ticking noise can be heard in the passenger compartment, probably from the driver's side (left side). I am attaching an audio recording. I also tried to make a sound recording from the engine compartment, but nothing but the sound of the engine could be heard. However, I don't know where the sound is coming from because it is so indistinguishable to me.
After the sound appears in the morning, it cannot be heard again for the rest of the road. You can't hear it during the rest of the day either, even if I start the car cold again after eight hours of standing. The car has manual air conditioning, the dual mass and clutch have already been replaced, as well as the crank bearings. The sound is the same when the clutch is depressed and released (I tested this because I suspected the dual mass).  The car is parked on a slight slope in front of the house for the evening (I don't know if that matters). If it matters: After starting, idling is normal, and the average consumption is 0.7L/H. After a few minutes, it adjusts to 0.5L/H.

Please help me figure out what it is. I hope somebody can.

postscript: Sorry If My english grammar was bad, I used google translator.

I have the same noise. I don't know what it is, but I think it's something registering or initialising or resetting. Maybe the climatronic?

I've got used to it, and it doesn't seem to have ever got worse.

Maybe someone more experienced can enlighten us.

I'd say a tapping noise on first starting for the day is either a slightly crudded up hydraulic tappet or more likely a touch of piston slap until warmed up.

I had a Passat diesel with a dodgy tappet - I found using Wynn's engine flush helped. However my Octavia 1.416v petrol had a knock/tap on first starting that quietened down after a few minutes - piston slap. It did it from near new until we sold it 19 years later and never got any worse.

I don't know if it could be from the climatronic or not. Anyway, I had a similar problem in my previous car with automatic ac and it made a similar sound but higher.
But this car only has Climatic (semi-automatic), and I don't know what it sets automatically.

Thank you, I'll keep that in mind. I forgot to write one thing: the first time this happened, it only appeared after about 25-30 minutes (so I think the engine was already warm). A few months later hanneped after 10 minutes. Now 2-3 minutes. However, the length of the sound did not change (attached video). But not every day, he didn't do it today, for example.

There is another scary issue to consider, the later bxe version of the 1.9 pd engine did have a reputation for throwing a con rod:-

Come on. Are you seriously linking an electronic noise to the ENGINE?

Conrods won't give you a warning, if they're going through they go through. And I'd be willing to put money on your TSI engine having more problems than BXE!

OP, either ignore it, or get a VCDS scan done. I have a faulty actuator but I just ignore it because, largely, it doesn't affect me. I believe mine is the recirculation and also something on the left is faulty, as the left blowers only blow cold usually.

Cycle through the options you get on your climatronic and see if you can isolate it. If not, scan.

Thank you! Fortunately, I knew about it. The conrod bearings have already been replaced.

Thank you! I have VCDS, my first thought was to scan, but found no errors. I will try to look more closely around the Climatic, to see if the error is there.

You can quite easily see the actuators if you pull the glovebox off. There are a couple on that side. Have a play with the dials too to see if there's any difference in temperature anywhere

Thanks for the idea! I'll try it when I have free time. Fortunately, I am already know how to remove the glovebox, I replaced the blower motor a few months ago.

I'd agree re my tsi engine potentially having more problems - all good so far and 111k miles covered - but we'll see! It gets very regular oil changes so fingers tightly crossed. I bought as in 2015 no one wanted a big petrol car so incredibly cheap - how times have changed!

I was an owner of a 1.9pd Superb for 10 years so am familiar - it was a fab engine.

I only mentioned because the words tap/knock were mentioned and it's a documented issue with the OP's engine code - the sound recording is also difficult to hear.

Back to the original post:-

My gut feel is it's the wrong frequency of tapping for a climate control servo issue - certainly I got used to that noise as I had a faulty/sticking recirculation servo  that drove me nuts when I bought my Superb mk 1 nearly new back in 2005. Fixed under warranty - full dash and front seats out job though.

The frequency of the noise is ringing a new bell with me - does this car have a dvd drive in the glove box re sat nav etc? Only a thought. Also noticed fan motor replaced - was this new?

No, I don't have anything same in the glovebox. The fan motor was brand new, the sound appeared long before the replacement.

I just don't see this being anything else other than something to do with the climatronic stuff. Get it plugged in and see if anything comes up.

I just ignore all the clicks mine make, it's never been worth worrying about, and this is clearly not coming from the engine.

But I know others are different, you want it sorting, so get it plugged in.

  • 4 weeks later...

Update - I haven't touched anything on the car and nothing has broken yet. Had a nightmare ordering a new tensioner.

Aircon compressor is breaking so I'm replacing it next week, will rule that out
