Squeeky noise at start-up?

Featured Replies

My Mk1 vRS is making a high pitched squeeky noise when starting each morning. Always disappear within a minute when the rev drop from 1200 to 1000.

At first I thought it was a belt issue but not sure about that.

Not sure how much you hear it on the recording, but IRL it's quite an annoying sound 😅

Bearings on the alternator or waterpump?

Maybe, but should it not be there all the time if so? Unless it goes away when temperature goes up slightly.

I read somewhere about a secondary air intake that is active at startup, would fit as it disappears when revs drop.

Yup, that sounds like a hoover being on, if that helps.

is it the starter motor? iirc there was similar squeely noises on other members' cars from the starter motor clutch.

Recording is not public so I can't listen to it. You could upload it to YouTube as an unlisted video.

I know what you mean but OP said it lasts for about a minute until the revs drop which is strongly pointing the finger at the SAI.

Ah, sorry, it must have expired. I've made it public now, try again please 🙂

I couldn't hear anything unusual on the video, but it might be that it doesn't pick it up or that I don't really know what I'm listening for!

The video doesn't really do it justice so it doesn't pick it up that well, but you should still hear the massive difference when the rev drops in the last seconds of the video.

There's an increase in tension on the alternator drive belt, just after starting, as it tries to make up for the power just taken from the battery.

This can cause related noise, either from the belt slipping, or from a bearing.  The noise would naturedly reduce and then stop as alternator load does.

Does it carry on any longer if the headlights and heated rear window are ON?

Not a chance with a poly-V serpentine belt and the automatic tensioner, belt slip is something from the last century, all cars have had this system for more than 30 years now.

Did a new recording. Still, its more noticeable to the ears than the phone, but I think you can hear it okay here, esp when the RPM drops after 30 seconds or so.

SAI pump. It's loud anyway, but you may have a split hose which makes it louder.

I haven't started mine up for a while, so I'll do a quick video for you to compare.

Where is the SAI located? Is it a hassle to deal with if wanting to check for a split hose?

I couldn't open the sound files, so I might be completely wrong. However, I mention what I have in mind anyway.

Last month I had a weird squeeky noise every time when turning the ignition switch on and every now and then when driving. Just a second or so, not a minute like yours. Turned out to be the flasher/hazard light relais.

It's around the front of the engine, under the inlet manifold, low down near the oil filter. It's got a weird looking mounting bracket and a hose that goes into the airbox I think.

Typical SAI pump failure, genuine they are daft money at £792.60 (part number 078 906 601 M) and even trade from ECP are over £300 so when mine went a few years ago I took a gamble on a £50 Chinese Max Speeding rods pump, it is barley audible and has worked faultlessly.

Late reply, I know, can anyone confirm this pump fits a MK1 vRS petrol 2004?

I'm not based in the UK(Sweden) so that limits my options.

Thanks!
