Aircon

Featured Replies

Afternoon guys/girls. I had my Aircon regassed earlier as it had run out, the guy told me that it was cold but then started to blow cool/warm air then cold n so forth. He plugged his Dyno machine in and it told him that the air quality sensor was faulty (among other fault codes not related to the Aircon), I have just been out in my car for around 30 mins with the Aircon on and it was ice cold the entire time even turned it off for few mins and back on and it was fine. Should I change the sensor as it's intermittently faulty or leave it as the Aircon is blowing nice cold air? Car is a MK2 vrs TDI estate. Any advice will be appreciated.

Not the most experienced skoda owner here but that sensor as far as I understand is just to toggle recirculation on when needed. My car has it faulty and works a treat AC/Clima wise. I have checked the price for a second hand one and that si about 50-60gbp so as long as the AC?Clima works, I can't be bothered to change it. It has nothing to do with the engine itself so it is used just for cabin air.

What makes you think yours is faulty?

AFAIK recirculation is switched on with reverse gear and a couple of other scenarios I cant recall, I have never seen any of mine switch in other situations, a fault code from the sensor will usually result in the compressor not pumping with a matching shut down code in the Measuring Blocks on VCDS.

Thank you for the reply mate👍, ahh ok I wasnt to sure exactly what the sensor does! I'm going out in the car shortly so il see if it still working ok like yourself if it's working fine il leave it

The guy that did the regas said the sensor had an intermittent fault so the Aircon temp he said was cold and then just blowing cool but so far it seems ok,  he didn't give me a fault code unfortunately which obviously would of been easier.

Check cabin fuse 4 (5 Amp). It supplies the air quality sensor and the refrigerant pressure sensor. I doubt the A/C would work at all if blown, but free and easy to check.

Ahh yeah I didn’t think of that bud il check that Lata, just been out and it’s working fine. Odd!

I'd put money on it being a faulting compressor solenoid valve.

Ok, does that mean a new compressor or can you just replace the valve?

The valve can be replaced or partially disassembled for cleaning if you were so inclined.

It's the handling of the refrigerant gas and flushing of the system that's the costly part of the procedure, if the system isn't flushed a new/cleaned valve will just succumb to the same clogging problem in time.

I didn't flush and the 2nd new valve worked fine for several years and was still working when I sold the car.

The first one didn't work

I have my own filling facilities but the cost of the gas if you waste 2 charges due to a non functioning new valve means that I would now buy a cheap Chinese compressor from Maxpeedingrods and have the old one, the pulley, shear plate etc as a spare.
