2011 vRS TFSI intermittent staring - cranks but doesn't fire

Featured Replies

Hi All

I have the problem as described. The car so far has always eventually started after a varying number of attempts and except for one occasion (this morning), once started it stays running. This morning it did stop again when put into gear, but started after a few more attempts.

The check engine light sometimes comes on, sometimes stays off.

I had the local specialist check and scan for error codes but nothing was reported and they couldn't replicate the fault.

One thing I noticed today was that while in the non-starting mode, the engine will crank without the clutch pressed. Normally it will not.

Does anyone have any advice on where to start looking for the root cause of this problem?

Any advice gratefully received.

I have a 2011 Ocatvia 1.8TSI L&K and I have somewhat similar problem with the car! When I turn the ignition ON after 24h+ when the weather is under 10c I can hear a "ding" and a spanner symbol is flashing on the top right of the screen. If I see this then I know the car won't start. If I leave the ignition on and I wait 10-20 seconds until my dashcam boots up and starts then I turn off the ignition, turn it on again and most likely the car will start without any problem! My first thought was the battery but I replaced it with a brand new one, but the problem still persist. But what is more interesting, if I don't try to turn on the ignition after I opened the car, and I connect my NOCO Boost GBX45 jump starter to the battery terminals, the car always starts immediately without any issue! If the weather is good and the temperature is over 15c this problem never happens and I never hear the "ding" sound and the spanner is not flashing on the screen and the car always starts to the first try! I hope someone can help us to find the root of this problem because it is very annoying!

Check your battery. A ding is usually caused by low battery voltage

Like I said in the post I replaced the battery and the problem still persist!

The battery is the source of power but the ding/ping is telling you that at the point of use the voltage is lower.

Check battery connections, check in the engine bay fuse box for corrosion on connections, Look for signs of overheated or melted plastic on fuse holders in this fuse box.

Probably something is draining the battery, because if I start it with a jump starter connected to the battery terminals it always starts on first try. I have just ordered a BM2 battery monitor on Amazon, it should be here tomorrow so I'll check what is going on!

Can you borrow a good battery for a few days to show that the battery is being drained and not just a battery problem.
