Millers + Extreme Restraint + New Oil

Featured Replies

= 75.3mpg average over a 45 mile commute this morning!!

I even lapsed restraint when I BMW sat on my back bumper, so I belched a colossal cloud of smoke over him (amazing how much amasses after tootling along for so long!!!).

Maybe this is the Millers helping? New oil defo helps as the engine will surely be turning over more freely. As for restraint, I can be very conservative when I want to be.;)

Nice MPG

I get low 30's now :(

I vaguely remember those times too

I don't understand how figures like this are possible...

I really pootled, and by that I mean feather throttle, 55mph and carrying as much speed through corners etc as possible, and its dead flat round here, and I can just squeeze 62mpg. But I die of boredom and tend to average about 48mpg.

If you're at a constant speed, between 50-60mph for 45 mins you might get a little higher, but 62 is decent for the PD130.

Rob also has the TDi 100 which is more economical again....

That figure is some going though

Pah! SWMBO got those figures over a 78 mile commute in a car that needed a service and was running on Tesco city diesel

I used to get low 70's quite regularly driving late, empty A/B roads, 12 mile trip, hills, sticking to speed limits and not going over 55mph and driving between the revs of 1500 - 2000

Managed 60-61 mpg this morning which is exceptional for me. M3, M25, M4 at around 08:00 on though, so tootled in at about 55-60mph...

My long term average is around 46 mpg so I think you can assume I have a heavy right foot when the road is clear.

Keeping the revs in the no boost / low boost range produces dramatically improved economy. The warm weather gives a 3-4 mpg improvement, too.

Overrun is the key. You can drive quite briskly as long as you use overrun instead of braking.

Absolutely, that's what i do, accelerate hard and then just ease off, and try and time your approach to traffic lights well, the Fabia VRs overun's beautifully.

I had 75mpg over a good run on m25 from stanstead to staines, was 60mph whole way no hold ups - thats what you need for this kind of mpg, and had the journey gone on longer the average would have kept creeping up higher!

I was pretty pleased, but I think that there are certain other things about my car that makes it easier to get good economy than a vRS: no bodykit, so cleaner air resistance, smaller wheels (well, I've got the 16" vRS ones on but compared to Tom's!) and hence less tyre / air drag, lighter car (at least 100kgs maybe more?) and then we get to the engine with it's smaller turbo.

BTW, I was running on Tesco City Diesel too!!:P

What's your TDi 100 pushing out Rob? You've got it remapped haven't you? Or is it on a tuning box?

Not saying that will have any effect on your figures, may even help as you'll have more torque at your disposal and won't have to push the engine as hard. I'm just curious :)
