Blue smoke when accelerating

Featured Replies

Hello again just taken Felicia pick up our after fitting my new (old) engine, ticking over and revving engine on drive it's fine but accelerating hard it's producing lots of blue smoke can anyone tell me wether a rebore and new pistons/rings will solve the problem or will it need a lot more doing to it ? Thanks in advance,Eager.

Blue smoke = Burning oil

A common phenomenon of engine malfunction is burning oil.  This means that the oils pass into the combustion chamber, consequently burning together with the gasoline.  In fact, this is the third most likely cause of oil loss, as long as you see that they are not leaking from the sump or the filter.  To be even more sure that this is what is happening in your car, you can check the spark plugs.  If they are wet and dark, and you have changed them recently, then it means that the engine is burning oil.  In extreme cases, when the spark plug is "wet" by oil, it will not give a spark, so a cylinder will not work, that is, it will "reak".

Finally, again in extreme cases, one piece of evidence is the emission of blue smoke from the exhaust.  In this case, consult an expert.  If you have caught the phenomenon at its beginning, a change in the "seals" of the engine is enough, otherwise you will have to do a motor rebuild.

Hi thanks for replying D.flaktos , the engine is from a 1998 motor so there is no chance of catching it early when you say an engine rebuild is that everything from bottom to top ?

Any sign of oiliness in the intake?

No, some repairs on the pistons (rings) at least due to worn but this can be measured from a mechanic.

What oil are you using (brand, viscosity) ?

Is it a 1.6? These engines often ingest oil through valve stem o-rings, as they become hard over time.

Yes papez it's a 1.6, how difficult would it be to change these please?

I found a video that shows the repair on an ABU engine (it should be similar to the AEE).

It is also possible to change the seals without removing the head, but that requires a skilled technician
