Sump Pan Gasket Or Not ?

Featured Replies

That old chestnut again... stripped threads in drain hole. So, after getting fed up of Son's '54 Fabia vRS dribbling oil spots all over my hardstanding, we decided to buy a new sump.

Got one off fleabay for 30 quid & it came complete with drain plug & gasket. What are your thoughts on the gasket? It seems to be made of an alloy, maybe aluminium with a integral rubber seal inset. The question is, would you use a liquid sealant as well. The rubber seal is hardly thicker than the metal gasket.

Done some searching & it seems sump pans on this model didn't have a gasket but were sealed with liquid sealant from the factory.

Your thoughts would be appreciated.

No I would use it as it is with perhaps a thin smear of grease to help it squidge and allow you to re-use it of you have to drop the sump again?

I would say that it will seal very well, with that design the rubber only needs to be slightly proud and its very protected against overtightening.

If when you remove your old sump you find the same gasket plus sealant and it looks like factory fitment then of course do the same.

I'm sure the PD left the factory with a liquid gasket between the sump and block. I've never fitted an alloy sump to a PD with that type of gasket - that's not to say it's not a new / improved thing.

In the past i've used a sparing bead of Wynns RTV as sealant and always been fine.

I suspect the gasket they have supplied would be ideally used dry - bit like timing cover gaskets on some Vauxhall engines, they use the same time of alloy/rubber gasket and must always be fitted without any additional sealant.

Many thanks for your replies, both of you are of same opinion then, i'll fit it dry after a mega-good clean.
