Strange issue with heater blower

Featured Replies

Hi guys the car has developed an issue with the heater blower. So the blower just stopped working on all numbers one morning so I assumed a fuse or motor kaput. But the following morning after sitting the motor was working on number 3 and 4. But it started to die off as if somebody was messing with a plug (hope this makes sense) and then it just stopped and wouldn't work. This happened 2 mornings instead row so I foolishly assumed the heater resistor. So I replaced it with a genuine valeo on from my local autoparts and best off all you can see where they have marked out the vag logo and vag part number. Any ways this hasn't solved my problem and the fan is just dead completely now. So is it going to be the motor or do I need to look elsewhere? I did read somewhere if there was a clicking type noise from the gearbox area its the motor that's kaput. But if had the clicking noise (which isn't constant) for sometime. But any help much appreciated guys.

Remove the motor, put a 12v battery on it and test. Sure it will be faulty. Mine didn't click.

When you test it, spin it by hand and it will probably continue to run but once stopped it won't start again without a manual spin. (Sometimes it will as it depends on where it stops as to whether it will restart by itself.)

Could be the motor brushes have worn down or they are sticking in the brush holders.

Hi guys thanks for the replies. I just read my post again and I noticed a few auto corrects. So not the gearbox I meant the glove box. I was under the illusion the motor wasn't serviceable. So u was looking at replace with non branded one if I have too but if I can get a set of brushes and strip it out to lubricate the bearings I would . Has any one done this successfully or should I just replace??

OK guys I got my hands on a brand new swaag unit. When I removed the old unit it did seem to have a bit of resistance to it plus it was rusty and full of dirt. So I have fitted the swaag unit and the new heater resistor (valeo part) and the fan is still dead. I checked fuses and can't see anything. On mine the rear wiper and the fan unit are beside one another and share the same sized fuse so I swapped them about but I'm still not having any luck. As I started in another post I'm having a issue with the washer pump and rear wipers not working which I'm guess now is the stalk so I've ordered one off ebay to see what happens. But I'm rather stumped with the heater issue and don't really want to  have to visit the auto spark.

I found an old thread on here and somebody had the same problems I have. They ended up finding out the black 460 relay was the issue. Has anyone else experienced this?

Hi fella,

Whe you say black 460 relay, do you know ehere that relay was located? I can't find the post you're referring to. Cheers

My blower stopped working. Checked all the fan related fuses. All seemed OK. Stuck VAGCOM on the car:

Something to do with the blower. Folllowed this

useful video to access the blower. Attached the fan directly to the battery. It spins really fast. OK, it's the "resistor" unit that varies the speed. So, order a new unit. Nop, still no working fan. Anyone got any other suggestions?

Bit more information: if I put a volt meter across the main +/- leads to the blower resistor, I get 12V. I also get 12V out of the resistor to the fan. So, why doesn't the fan spin if it does spin if I connect it directly to the battery?

No 0v connection to the motor when tested on the vehicle, maybe the Climatronic switches that to turn the fan on and off separate to the shunting of the resistor.

Follow-up. I checked the fan again after my wife had arrived home with blue feet. Even directly wired to the battery it didn't spin. I went over the voltage from the fan connector, they all showed 13V. OK, the fan was broken. Ordered a new fan on eBay. Wow! A working fan and a warm car.
