P0673

Featured Replies

So gets up this morning and EML light is on plugs my old scanner in and its saying code P0673 for glow plug.

Car was spluttering a little on idle to.

So looks like I need a glow plug change or could it be something else that's making the glow plug light come on ?? As it usually is I've heard ??

Any tips or advice greatly appreciated 👍

Almost certainly, the light is for pretty much any engine fault, in summer weather the glowplugs are not needed at all other than to reduce the cranking time by milliseconds, the post start up cylinder heating is for emissions.

You may well have a faulty glowplug or problem in the circuit but I doubt it will be affecting your idle running.

That's a good point they shouldn't be needed this time of year really.

I clear the code and all is good for like 4/5 days then it comes back

Glowplugs are used all year round and for more than just cold starts.

they are used for cylinder heating for emissions and also for post combustion heating to assist with dpf regenerations.

Quite a few uses for a glow plug on a new diesel engine.

depending on the engine it’s also worth noting you have 1 glow plug different to the rest with a pressure sensor on it

p0673 is a fault on the glow plug circuit of cylinder 3. On the 1.6 and 2.0 tdi Octavia engines I have worked on, the cylinder 3 glow plug is the one with a combined pressure sensor.
You can test the glow plugs using a multimeter. They should be reasonably straightforward to change but in reality can sieze into the cylinder head and be extremely difficult to unscrew or snap off.

What pressure does it measure and why, peak combustion pressure?

Yes the third plug is very expensive compared to the other 3.

A friend of a friend has one to sell me cheaply. But if I get one done I'd like them all doing at same time. Should I acquire a matching  brand as the third plug I'm gonna buy ??? It's a Burg Wooner I think the manufacturer is.

Had a mate plug his vcds in and the only historical fault that showed up  is glow plugs from the previous times I deleted them with my basic odb.

So am gonna get the garage to fit them I wont be touching them myself am a bit to heavy handed 😃

I don’t think a different brand will matter, they should be made to the required specifications.
