Where is the coolant pump located at on the 1.6 TDi?

Featured Replies

Hi,
I've noticed lately that my car was eating coolant at a fast rate. Took it into a shop and they said the coolant pump is "exploded" (lol). Their delays to repair the car are too long and I'm looking into doing it myself, however, I'm not sure where it is located as I've left the manual in my car and can't access it as it's in the shop.
So, I'm turning to you guys: Where is located the coolant pump and is it hard to change?

Thanks a lot! Wish you a good day!

Water pump is located under the cam belt cover on the left looking from the front of the car, if you decide to do the job yourself you will need to change the timing belt and pulleys at the same time, you need to replace coolant with he correct VW anti-freeze also it's not a job for thr faint hearted as you will also need a few locking tools to do this job a very good trolley jack and axle stands it is possable but not that easy, I did one for a friend a few years ago but borrowed the locking tools the cam belt kit was around £100 and the pump was also £75, some new replacement pumps have an alloy impeller so just need the normal coolant but if you get a plastic impeller model pump you need the correct VW coolant as normal coolant can damage the pump It took me a good weekend to complete this job as I had never done one before but would have been quicker next time but never did one again, good luck whatever you decide

Thanks a lot for this answer!
I should have every tools for the job, now I need to decide if I want to break my bad doing so or not 😆 They're asking +670€ for the job which is correct considering the work to do. Maybe I'll let them do it, I'll see.
Thanks a lot again for your answer, really helped me! If I decide to do it by myself maybe I'll post the steps on how to do it for everyone :)
