I have a larger SLR-type camera with loads of different lenses which I use for most of my work but I also have a Dimage X31 for everyday use. They're very small and light and also have 3x optical zoom plus loads more other features. We've had quite a few of the X range and the quality of images is brilliant. The one thing I would say is go for one which takes AA batteries then you'll never get caught without batteries.
