Fabia 1.4 16v 2005 (petrol) limping randomly during slow speeds and stop starts.

Featured Replies

Hi All,

I've been a long time lurker here and this forum has helped me resolve a lot of issues with my skoda fabia elegance 6y2 1.4 16v bky .

Recently my car has started randomly limping suddenly and turning off and showing the red battery icon.

I've recently done the following repair on this car and this issue is still occurring and was hoping someone could provide some guidance.

So far, I've replaced the following parts on the car to resolve this issue. Battery, alternator, throttle body (recoded), fuel pump, fuel injectors , fuel ignition,  spark plugs and a new servo vacuum hose (had to jerry rig it as Skoda no longer sell the part)

It seems to happen randomly, but mostly when I'm in slow traffic or slowing down. so it seems to happen only in low speeds.

It's driving me mad trying to find out why this happens.

I did do a vag-com diagnostic check and was given 2 codes which were p17961 and p1503.

I'd appreciate any guidance or assistance

Is it a BKY with or without an EGR valve?

...so that's P1553 then?

Hi Breezy_Pete,

My Car is the one with an EGR valve. Thats the only part i didn't replace as i didn't get an engine warning light.

It's hard to know what to suggest. You've already replaced so much that I wouldn't like to suggest replacing the EGR without good evidence that it was at fault.

It would be nice to be able to blank off the pipe at one end or other, to see if anything changes.  Throttle body (cooler) end seems the better bet for this but not sure what the best way to do it would be.  Just disconnecting the electrics from the valve won't really change much I think, if leakage past the closed valve is the issue.

I haven't replaced the egr yet and was planning to. Could that be an issue?

Possibly, yes. But as I say, it would be nice to prove it is causing or worsening the problem by completely blocking the gas path into the inlet manifold from it.

It seems like there was actually a genuine part for a blanking gasket at the head end of the system (item 28 here) but unfortunately the table on the right doesn't have an item 28.  Could you make something?

I found that plate on another page, it's 036 131 281, £2.09 + VAT from Skoda dealer. No doubt they'll have to order in, probably from Germany.

Probably worth trying in my opinion.  Maybe also block the air path into the valve via the air filter item 27 too, for completeness.

Site is partslink24, which you have to pay for.

LLL parts is a nice (free) alternative currently though, except it doesn't filter by VIN: LLLParts

I'll give a call to my most closest one and see what they say. they might have it in stock

Thank you for your help

...or you could just unplug the EGR valve and see if it stops doing it.

You could, but as I said above, if the issue is the valve leaking when closed, that will make no difference.

It would be a good idea to disconnect it while doing blanking experiments though. Or to do just disco first to see if that alone helps, yes.
