Spare wheel size

Featured Replies

Hi all,

In spec'ing our new build, long story short we didn't spy a spare.

Should have and wold do even the chance again but....

On a Kamiq shod with 17" wheels standard Braja. What size is the space saver?

I am assuming it's an inch down at 16" can anyone confirm?

Thank you.

It appears that a 6.0J x16 ET 35 wheel with a 195/60 16 tyre is the correct spare wheel size. Kit with correct size wheel, jack, wheel brace and polystyrene insert etc is around £240.

As you can see in the chart below, the outside diameter of 195/60R16 is 2.6% smaller than 205/55R17.

If it fits in the spare wheel well, getting a spare wheel the same size that you have might be better.

Outside diameter of tyres

205/55R17 657.3mm

195/60R16 640.4mm (-2.6%)

Thank you also @Carlston

I read somewhere that the 16" is difficult to prise out of the wheel well due to the weight vs clearance for your fingers (perhaps the bolt holes could come in handy I honestly won't know until I have the Kamiq I guess.

But I agree that 17" feels a better option though I see that the ET goes from 35 to 40 and the width is 6.5 instead of 6.

I have no idea yet what the Braja 17is in those terms.

Worth considering.

If you start off by just getting the jack and foam kit (which is relatively cheap) you can try one of your current wheels for fit...and take it from there.

You can see in the Kamiq owner's manual that 195/60R16 fitted to a 6Jx16 ET35 rim is a winter tyre size suitable for snow chains.

Technical data and specifications

Permitted rim and tyre combinations for mounting snow chains:

Rim dimensions

Tyre dimensions

6Jx16 ET35

195/60 R16

Only use snow chains with links no larger than 13 mm, including locks.

I'm getting a sign in page to view the content from link you sent.

But no option to sign up.

Is this something that you set up when you get the car?

I've removed the link. It's not important, as it was just the latest version of the Kamiq owner's manual.

I’ve found that the trick to getting the spare wheel out is to remove the polystyrene insert, unscrew the plastic retaining nut, then give the plastic retaining bolt a quarter turn and remove it from its bayonet type socket. This gives more clearance to get the wheel out.
