First long range trip tomorrow

Featured Replies

Heading to IKEA in Edinburgh tomorrow so it's going to be my first long range trip, although in the grand scheme of things it isn't that far.

Do you think I will manage the return trip from Broughty Ferry or will I need a quick top up whilst at Edinburgh? If so is it worth topping up at IKEA or someplace still in the area of Edinburgh before heading home?

At present I'm trying to get it fully charged before setting off. Waiting for my home charger to be installed so I'm at a public fast charger.

Have got various apps for locations on my phone and have invested in a OBD2 BLE adapter for use with EvNotify and ABRP. Not quite got it figured out yet though.

I guess I'm slightly panicked about it as my wife and kids will be there and I'm not wanting us to be left stranded if I get it wrong.

You might, but you need to allow for diversions / accidents etc so maybe just top up a bit once across the Forth.

Do not charge at IKEA,  unless you are wanting to over pay.

EDIT.

Actually if still 69 pence a kWh and working you might as well use, or use the slow charger for a top uo.

Straiton Park & Ride is Charge Place Scotland as is Hermiston Park & Ride and Ingilston.  55 pence a kWh though.

Do you have a Charge Place Scotland account & a RFID card.   If not the chargers work with a Credit or Debit card anyway and my CPS often does not work there.

??

Is the Charge Place Scotland App on your phone, so the Map.?      Bottom 2 are from ZapMap & showing IKEA.

I noticed that Straiton P&R was just across the road and tbh I hadn't thought about the IKEA chargers.

I've only got a CPS account (interesting website 😔) and have the RFID card and haven't registered with other suppliers, BP etc.

Speaking of CPS, tonight the charger cut out mid charge and I had to restart it, however it only logged my 2nd session which was only a couple of quid. 😀 Maybe I should take this as unofficial thanks for finding and reporting a security flaw on their website. 😬

@tootHave you had any success with Webpay using chargeplace Scotland chargers?

Actually more choice of chargers there now.

@philipashbyNever used or tried.

I have a new card from Motability that gives access to most chargers now.  One account for various partners they have.

Never managed to sign in or get new passwords to CPS since they suspended them a few weeks ago, but my phone is still showing history and charges like tonights.

Charging at various places if there is a card reader paying on CC / DD i use that, especially Ingilston P&R.  it is a PITA.

Cheaper out to Broxburn Lidl.  PodPoint.

EDIT, that is now up to 65 pence a kWh.         I paid 62 pence @ Tesco Podpoint yesterday & today.

PS.

I have used Evyve 75 kW DC chargers in Aberdeen & Perth

They are at Straiton Retail Park B&M and showing @ 66 pence / kWh on PlugShare,  handy.

75 pence on ZapMap so that sounds right for the price now.

@Ovv  When i am charged £1.00 or £1.50 for plugging in and chargers not starting i make them take  that charge off.

The hundreds of Quids worth of charging that do not register and the thousands of miles free i got i do not offer to pay that back.

The system is crap.

But crap in my favour.

Having fully charged I can now see why people recommend a heat pump.

Jings! It’s only 150 mile round trip.

Surely the car will do that on a charge.

I'm sure it would have but seeing as this is my first EV and I'm pretty much new to it all I wasn't sure. Having just returned home and done a few calculations it would have been fine, however I'm still waiting for the home charger to be installed so it would have meant another trip to the local charger. Gave it a quick top up before heading back and all was good.

@Ovv

Were you only about 150 miles from Public Charger to home and to IKEA and back home then to a charger?

What sort of efficiency did the car show in the not very cold yet weather?

I used to use the Kinross Charger at the Park & Ride near Sainsbury for a quick top up but they became unreliable & maybe blocked by the same cars.

The chargers at the Service Area i never used because of the cost but i might need to with my MINI just to be OK as the winter comes on.

@BoxerBoy

Obviously people might go elsewhere and not directly there and directly back and it is good to know that there is plenty range if you do need to divert and maybe cross the Tay Bridge rather than the Friarton Bridge and this past week the Traffic Lights and flooding have been making for big queues between Friarton & Dundee.

159 miles since yesterday's charge. Heating was on and I sat on cruise at 70 there and back. I had from memory 56% battery left at IKEA and using ABRP I could have made it home with about 13% left but I wanted to ensure that I had enough charge left for pootling about next week so I charged at Straiton P&R upto 80% prior to leaving. ABRP quoted arrival back home with 36% however it was 41% with 85 miles remaining when I parked up.

Getting the home charger will hopefully make a difference as I don't think I will be so paranoid about what remains knowing that I have access to charge rather than heading to the charger in the Ferry.

Overall I'm happy with the trip, Mrs wanted me to be cautious over the range rather than push it and end up running low or worst case scenario running out of juice. We really don't go much further in one day than the trip we just did. It all feels very new to me and very much a learning experience.

I just got back in and it is 2"oC.    I have no heated steering wheel this winter and really the heater does not blast out heat while charging lie the Corsa electric did.

Heated seats work when charging but there are no wind deflectors because on frameless doors so i need to sort that out before the snow and rain again because i sit in when charging.

PS

When passing the Dundee Tesla Supercharger you could get a quick top up.

Open up an account as a Non Tesla Driver.    (Dundee & Aviemore are part of the Scheme,  Aviemore very handy.)

20,00- Midnight & to 16.00 is 50 pence a KWh in Dundee & 16.00-20.00 61 pence a kWh.

8 x 150 kW max chargers.

Broxden Park & Ride Perth new Chargers can not be far off being ready.

35 pence a kWh.

Stirling Park & Ride, Castle View is the same.

Chargers in Auchterarder near the Crown Wynd, beside toilets, chip shop ect on High Street,

The only chargers I have ever paid for away from home are Tesla sites in Banbury and Cambridge.

They are reliable and cheaper than most others if you do not justify getting a subscription.

Only issue is an Enyaq takes up two spaces as cable too short on charger to fit our cars when parked as a Tesla would park.

Not been an issue yet but I suspect it will be at some point

Edinburgh, Perth, Glasgow Tesla Superchargers are not part of the Non Tesla pilot scheme in Scotland.

If you install the Tesla app on phone you can find the 16 or so sites you can charge any make of car at.

luckily most of my long trips are to Cambridge now where my daughter lives about 1m from Trumpington Tesla site. About the cheapest charging I am aware of in area as well.

@Ovv

Now 5 Tesla Supercharger hubs in Scotland available to Non Tesla drivers.

Yeah I spotted the locations when I signed up to the app. Always handy to know these options exist.

In other news, home charger was fitted last week prior. Changed over my tariff to an EV with my supplier as well.
