low power or just me ?

Featured Replies

I've had my octy for a few months now. It's been great but lately it seems a bit slower. Not really sure if its just me getting used to it or there's an issue somewhere.

Its been superchipped and had a dump value fitted.

Noticed that while motorway driving and putting my foot down it seems to take off quickly but start to loose power almost. Also when you take you foot off the power its has a quick boost of power - is this normal?

almost feels like covering the accelerator half way down provides the most power.

is it just me or is it time for a blueflame and a revo remap :)

might just be you getting used to it or it might a bit of heat soak from our nice weather recently :)

What about the DV, is it an atmospheric one and if so doesn't the 1.8T not like these?

Seeing as it's Superchipped an atmo valve it would more than likely put a CEL light on. I dont' think it retards the performance though.

More than likely I would say it's the heat.....inlet temps make a big difference particularly higher up the rev range.

I think i maybe just gettin used to the power?

Sounds to me like your dump valve causes the problems. If you put your standard one back on and cover the recirculating pipe with a bottle cap and leave the standard bosch dv dumping to air you will get the same effect and could of saved yourself some money if your just wanting the Tscccch!

any chance of any pics and a step by step guide of how to do this as i really like the sound of a dump valve tscccch and wouldnt mind doing it especcially if its a free mod:thumbup:and i take it that it wont do any damage either:)

Mine has exactly the same problem.. half throttle seems to give more kick than full!

I have a standard DV though, could it be up the spout?

Dont have any pics but will get some in a couple of weeks! No it doesnt do any harm! well never done my old one any harm

1) Remove engine cover

2) You will find your dump valve located to the rear right of the engine

3) Remove the clip off the pipe that comes from the bottom of the dump valve its a pain in the **** to do but does work.

4)From the pipe that now has an open end insert a bottle top i prefer pepsi but hey your choice!. Put a jubilee clip round the pipe to stop to bottle top getting lodged or falling out of the pipe.

5) Start your car and hear the difference take it for a run after putting your engine cover back on.

Disclaimer: I in no way endorse this or guarantee no damage can be caused by doing it.

Also you will find a tad of oil on your dump valve when you remove it this is perfectly normal and you will lose some power not a great deal but a bit and you cant get your car above 132 with this done!

wat's a "Jubilee" clip?

So other than making your standard dump valve go 'whooootishssss' and reducing your cars power.

Does anyone actually know the cause behaind the problem the three of us seem to be having? ie. General lack of power but what seems to be more power at half throttle than at full?

I have replaced the bottom intercooler pipe and that improved things a little bit but its still not right.

Oh glad its not just me having this issue. The dump value is a re-circ hyperboost HX.

ordered a VAG-COM cable so hopefully that will shed some light on the issue.

could this be a fueling issue. over fueling when you put your foot down ?

I didn't think you said it was an amto BOV.

Most DV related problems are due to the diaphragm splitting and you'd normally hear a hissing....the problem would also occur all the time as opposed to what you are experiencing.

Do you have VAGCOM? You need to see if there are any fault codes.

Do you know if the problem has occured when the weather is cold?

Is the step off of power momentary i.e. very quick like a blip? Also is the burst of power coming off the throttle also very quick? Happened around the 3krpm mark?

For remapped cars this sounds very similar to the overboost facility where the overboost is turned up a little too much....on a plot this will look like a spike. The oveboost facility will give you a great rush but once past the spike peak it will drop back to the normal boost levels. Coming off the throttle just the over side of 3k wil see you hit the overboost and hence the slight surge.

Your tuner will be able to turn this down...so you'll loose part of the rush but also the surge/drop off.

Obviously I'm only suggesting things but it would be better to get the errors codes if any and, vhave a chat with Superchips.

Just got the VAG-COM cable through so hopefully get it up and running today.

Cannot hear any hissing and i have had a look around the pipes for any obvious problems.

The more power on half throttle has been with the car since i bought it - few months ago. I wouldnt say the weather has much to do with it. Only really tell on motorway journeys when foot to the floor in 5th.

As for the power loss it does seem worse on hot days and I can understand due to high inlet temps and heatsoak.

My car hisses alot i just put it down to the turbo.. you think my DV is fuc't?? (its a standard bosch jobby)

I can just about hold my hand on my intake manifold after a good run its that warm.. is that normal for octy's with the standard SMIC?

"Hissing"?? When you accelerate you should hear a whistling.

Hissing sounds like a leak...to me anyway.

Manifold...will be hot/warm.

Hissing/Whistling... sounds like a bit of both to me!

I am hopefully meeting up with rob-vrs this week for a bit of car to car comparison..

I have a VAG-COM lead but the only laptop i have is my work one and i dont have admin rights on that to install the drivers :S

Sounds like its definately your dumpvalve or a leak on the boost pipes

got VAGCOM working and the usual suspect - VAG Fault Code 17705 - will replace the pipe and see if that fixes the issues

  • 1 month later...

is this boost leak fault code then?

what fuel are you using? 95RON or 97/98RON SUL? 95RON fuel will aggravate the power-reducing effect of high inlet air temps - maybe a simple and quick test to try some SUL or Optimax from an empty tank if you are normally using 95.

I'm using optimax pretty much all the time. Hasn't been too bad lately. Top end just feel very weak when you boot it.

Haven't got round to changing the pipe that might be causing the issues. Hopefully next week I can get to a stealer and get one.
