Whistle in car after Stage 1 Remap

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

I have a mk3 Octavia VRS. I recently took it to a local performance tuning guy, who said that he could give me 300 bhp + pops and bangs map for £250 quid, which I thought was reasonable. However after some testing (on private roads) when I hit 120mph my EPC light comes on, and my car goes into limp mode. Not only that but when I'm driving normally with no music, I can hear a whistle from the front of the car, almost like overboost noise.

Has anyone had this issue, any idea as to what it might be, and how to fix it? I was debating getting the map taken off and taking it to a proper VW map specialist like APR or R-Tech.

Thanks for any help in advance.

What root is getting at is did you make sure the general health of the car was good before loading the map in?

To add to the questions, what did they do (if any) in the way of checking codes before and after and also checking the emissions?  A high power map for £250 is questionable when most known tuners are charging £400+.  We aren't trying to put the tuner/map down, just trying to make sure you aren't about to blow your engine.

As always though, best to go back to the tuner with any issues.

Whiseling from the front is most likely the turbo failing.

The tune was pretty cheap, as @MarkyG82said, did they check the health of the car and tune it on a dyno or did they just send a standard map.

Also After turning the TSI, you have to run on 98 fuel.

In France, a proper tune is more like 650 euros.

Take the car back, have the standard map put back in, get your money back and go to a proper specialist because a whiseling turbo is never good.

The car has full dealer service history, admittedly definitely should check spark plugs with dealer.  I'm definitely going to go back to the Tuners as you're all correct it shouldn't be whistling. I'm not sure about codes tbh, I will ask them when I go back to them, as for someone changing the bhp of my car, they didn't really give me much information. I might take the advice of @nickytheshaft as I'm not entirely sure on the legitimacy of the tuners.

I was unaware that you have to run 98 fuel after a remap so that's good to know. thank you!

Was the car serviced and spark plugs changed, and air filter checked and the car running E5 / 99 Ron min superunleaded before the remap and checked then for no Logged Fault codes.?

How many miles has the car done?

@Rooted Thank you for this, if you can see the comment I made to @MarkyG82 the car has full dealer service history. The car has done 76000 miles roughly.

To follow up with @nickytheshaftthey did not put it on a Dyno and just sent a standard map by the sounds of it.

@Skylx567  What does the Full Service History show as having been done?, because there is not much they do.

Tuning a car or turning it into a Show Car as per your other post needs a bit more than having others do stuff if they are not going to be checking things.

The dealer service history is very good, it's definitely more into the extended scope. Admittedly the remap was more for my own fun rather than anything to do with a show car at the moment, in future the remap, like stage 2+, etc will be where I will be taking it and therefore will definitely put more effort into spending time researching the place to take it. In hindsight it was a mistake not taking it to a VW Specialist anyway.

In general,  a FDSH is just a record of what has been done and not necessarily a record of what should have been done.  It may well have been looked after correctly and a good read of the history should show that.

If you are looking at "stage 99" then maybe taking it to a good place that looks after tuned cars and get them to check it over is a good idea.  Stuff like compression testing and the health of the turbo is a good start.  Alongside new plugs, fluids (oil and coolant) and filters should see you on your way to understanding the state of the motor and how much boost it is likely to take.

Otherwise, a quality map with some well thought out handling mods could get you to a proper enjoyable point.  Don't forget the brakes too.

Yeah completely agree, I'm a touch Naive to the world of maps and mega naive to how much damage it could potentially do the car if not correctly.

Thanks for all your help guys, I'll definitely take it to a VW performance specialist to ensure it's got all the right plugs, fluids, filters etc. But I'll definitely take it as a learning point and try and stay with them whilst it's being done so I know.

So how did all of this end up?

It ended up all good, went back to the tuner and got the tune taken off. Taking it to a proper Vag tuner next for them to do a health check before putting a tune on it!
