Check Coolant level (the car has been stationary for around a week)

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

Scala 1.5 TSI here.

The car has been sitting at the parking for around a week. This morning I started the car and I had "Check Coolant level" with red exclamation triangle light.

But when I went back home, the light was gone.

The car is behaving normally.

Anyway, the car has 26k km.

If the coolant needs refilling, which one should I use?

Thanks

Edit: checked now. The coolant is just barely below the minimum level.

In a way this is good, becasue it means that your sensor is extremely accurate. The water will expand slightly as the engine warms up, which brings the level up above minimum. You need a relatively small amount of water, so as a one-off topping up with tap water will be fine. Use cooled boiled water if you're concerned about water purity. If you want to use antifreeze, match the colour of what's already in there. Don't add neat antifreeze - dilute it around 50/50 with water first. And watch your level over the next few weeks - you might have a slight coolant leak.

Thanks for replying. I was researching which coolant is the best to use and was about to refill it today from the one at the gas station. It's a ready mix.

I'll take a close look at it in coming weeks. The car has a first service in March, so I'll tell them to look into it nevertheless.

VW being VW have their own specification of coolant, the number used to be on the coolant tank unless it varies for your country the current VW spec is G12evo (TL774L) available as pre-mixed or concentrate, .  You can check this and get lots more information by reading the Owner's Manual.   Available from here. - https://manual.skoda-auto.com/004/en-com/Models

Hi colleagues

Thanks for this thread. I was having the same issue - coolant warning messages coming on from cold when outside temperature low but then not coming on when engine warmed up or when milder outside. I have added a small (tiny) amount of water and have had no recurrence of messages. Thanks again - much appreciated
