Fan killing the battery

Featured Replies

Hi all, has anyone ever had an issue with the fan turning on after the engine has been switched off? 2.0 tdi auto170 vrs.

Just has RAC out to jump start, and found the fan turned on straight away as soon as jump leads attached causing a massive drain,

What did the RAC technician suggest?

Disconnect the battery, and get it seen to, have tried to find the fan fuse or the relay to stop it, that way i can keep what little charge is left in it, and lock the car,  but locking it and diconnecting the battery is just setting the alarm off, the 2 fuse locations stated on the cover, doesnt have fuses in it , and the actual fuses dont seem to be in the same order as stated on the cover, and the one u der the bonnet has no details, and also only 1 relay, so ita lying out in the atreet unlocked with its throat cut and anything of any value has been removed.

Check temp sensor for coolant and wires to and from sensor. This would in my opinion be a good place to start

Inactive after ignition switched off, a red herring.

Does your 2012 vehicle have a DPF? The fans will run on after shutdown if a regen is interrupted but should stop after 10 minutes.

I would find and test the fan relay, it sounds like the contacts may be fused together, it may be part of a controller but hopefully will be seperate, others with knowledge of the model will I hope advise.

Yes and no, it comes on all by itsself aftwr the ignition has been turned off, and stays on, drained the batter bad enough last nighy it set the alarm off, rac turned up 5 hours aftwr it was switched off, put jump leads on, and the fans kicked in straight away, im starting wi coolant temp sensor, if that doesnt fix, then need to try and find the relay, just gonni get it fired up with new coolant temp, and see if it still happens, try unplugging and seeing what happens,

No start with dpf then coolant sensor

Get it scanned.  It's normal for the fans to keep running for a while after you switch the engine off if the DPF has been doing a regeneration while you've been driving and switching off has interrupted this.  However, it shouldn't run for long enough to flatten a healthy battery.
