Temporarily would not start - dash showing many errors

Featured Replies

I have a new Octavia 2.0 diesel since May this year. 12,500 km on clock. All good until recently except for the famous infotainment system restarts which were fixed with an OTA software update.

I went to start it on Friday afternoon and Lane Assist yellow icon was lit and dash (left clock side) seemed to roll through many errors in text format. I forgot to record them at time but there were many - could have included Lane Assist, Stability Control etc etc. It did this for about 10 minutes and refused to start. All was fine afterwards and it has been fine since with no evidence of issues.

I called dealership and they were quite honest saying it could be a control unit having a "fit". They did acknowledge that they had seen one of their own demo cars with similar some months ago and it cleared itself and was fine since. It is in for a service in less than 3 weeks so I am going to chance driving until then unless the issue appears again and gives me grief. They had no error messages phoned home from my car.

Has anyone had similar? Could be a software bug with recent updates?

No issues with anything since the 1941 firmware update. I've got a near 300 mile drive to Worcestershire & back tomorrow, so I'll be interesting to see if it behaves itself, especially as it did yet another update yesterday!

I've had the issue couple of times since I got car and I've been on software 1941 since June. Thought it was just a hybrid issue.

I put it down to being in areas with absolutely no mobile signal and car couldn't connect to skoda on start so it refused to work

Did it start after a few mins each time?

Yep last time after wondering around trying to get a signal to phone recovery with no luck. I tried again and it all worked no error at all.

Been 2 months now without it happening again

Why would it not start without a mobile phone signal?

That's ridiculous notion. Because if you stopped in a valley somewhere in the Lakes, Peaks, Highlands, Dartmoor or Exmoor, there's often no mobile signal, so under that premise you couldn't risk visiting any of them as the car won't start!

Same way if phone network went down, we'd be in trouble. My theory is I may have interrupted an update or it was an update that didnt run cleanly.

I queried dealer on getting around the issue if I disconnected battery for a few minutes and he said it was definitely suggested for some issues by VAG. He did say it would throw other errors up when connected to diagnostics again so he wasnt hugely in favour of this approach.

I mean what would happen if you entered the Blackwall, Rotherhithe, Limehouse, Hindhead, Mersey, Tyne, Southwick Hill tunnels amongst others, your car would stop. An utterly bizarre thought indeed.

I was talking about initial startup not while the car is running.

Basing my view on the issue happening twice for me and both times no mobile connection to the car. Its got to be a software issue and probably because it can't get config info from skoda server.

My guess is as good as anyone else's as I had it looked at by skoda first time it happened and the car had recorded no errors at all in the logs

Have had this happen a few times but mine won't start for hours weirdly. Dealers have never heard of the issue which this thread gives me further pause. They've swapped a relay each time as well as installing anew start button. I now have instructions to video the errors next time and film myself pressing the brake pedal and of the stop lights when doing so. I had literally every system bar 1 have error codes so something was/is definetly having a fit.

Good luck!

My car appears to have developed a bit of a similar fault. I posted on here yesterday saying the HUD on mine wasn’t working but since then it has developed. Yesterday while driving it went into limp 1500rpm mode randomly. I stopped and switched off the engine, started and immediately was okay again. Last night I observed random lights on the back coming on and off while the car was parked. And finally today when I went to start the car the e-brake engaged and dragged the pedal forwards and backwards a few times then displayed a red warning saying get to garage before the entire display and infotainment system went off. Now the car is completely bricked and I cannot start, stop, lock or basically anything,

I don’t suppose this has happened to anyone else has it?

That sounds like a whole brand new kettle of gremlins.

I did an update on my info centre yesterday. Hopefully I'm not due the same stuff now

My hope is that the battery is goosed - there are similarities to when I’ve had a dead battery before but the normal signs aren’t necessarily there. Every start has been immediate or ‘strong’ until now so it’s odd that it would just cliff edge like it appears to have. The only thing that is different to my normal usage is the update which killed off the HUD and some other optional extra electric items; and the cold weather. I’ll update when my good VRS gets home and does a jump on this niggly new one.

Car was at dealer for first 15k km service yesterday. This incident with the rolling errors and failed start did not show up in the log. It's a case of fingers crossed and hope for the best that it doesnt happen again.
