TPMS

Featured Replies

Ok so this has been slowly driving me mad ever since I took ownership in April 2022.

The car says the 20” wheels should have 2.4 bar front and rear and once a fortnight constantly tells me to check the tyres.

The diagram will normally show one or both of the rears has dropped to 2.2 bar (front normally ok).

So, am I being paranoid about the tyre pressures constantly dropping so often (I always go off and put air in whenever the car says the pressures have dropped)?   Or is this a “feature” of the VW software?

Secondly, is there a way of turning off or acknowledging the message from the car so as not to drive me mad and make me paranoid about the tyres?! Have looked everywhere for this. At least then I could go back to checking once every other month like I’ve done on every other car I’ve owned!

All advice greatly appreciated

Hello, the fact that you say your system is flagging a 0.2 bar drop suggests that you have direct TPMS fitted - is that correct?

IIRC the indirect system flags at around 0.5ish bar on my Octavia. Although small drops in pressure are normal, regular drops in specific tyres, such as you are getting, possibly suggests slightly imperfect tyre-bead seal, slight leakage at valve - or porous rims.

Keep monitoring and topping up your tyres as required, test the tyre valve for leakage by using film of saliva or liquid soap.

As above, sounds like you have the direct TPMS as in photo below. It is normal for tyre pressures to go down when the temperature drops, but if as you say the rears are loosing pressure every fortnight the tyres/ wheels need checked for leakage.

I suspect you have leaks. Valve itself or micropunctures. Check for small screws in tyres. I have had tons of that.

If you doubt in readings - buy a manometer  (pressure gauge).

Just remembered - check the front tyres, inside. 20" means 4 wheel drive and this eats your front tyres from inside. I bet you have a spot or two where the fabric underneath the rubber is coming out. Tyre itself might have 5 or more millimeters  left, but the inside thing is bad.

Seems too obvious but Is that not the killer line?

Would regularly putting air in your tyres ever since 2002 not suggest leakage?   Forget TPMS,  what does the air gauge read each time you put air in the tyres?

Actually since 2022 for OP. For a number of reasons, all tyres will lose some pressure over time - even a tyre with perfect seals at rim beads and valve - due to slight porosity of the tyre itself.

The TPMS is just there as an assist for regular checks and false alarms are rare, even on my indirect system.

Actually all tyres might not lose pressure over the time that many have a vehicle & that could be year after year that they stay inflated.

There are tyres that deflate pretty evenly around the corners and do not set off the TPMS.

The TPMS was really introduced because of those that could not even tell they had a blow out with Run Flat Tyres.   The likes of a BMW driver.

There is information from many sources saying that tyres can lose up to 3PSI per month by osmosis. In the worst case, pressure loss from that alone could be more than 0.5 bar in 3 months.
