Cam/Timing Belt - When to change?

Featured Replies

By the end of this month, I'd have had my Skoda Fabia 1.6 16v Sport 14 years. I bought the car new from my local Caffyns dealership, and until this month, have always had it serviced by them. For one reason or another, I decided to try a local independent garage; they made a good impression and appear to have done a good job. My annual mileage has dropped significantly since 2020, but I've still managed to clock up 143,000 practically trouble-free miles. The only significant item to be replaced has been the exhaust system.

Here's my question. On the Service Report, the new local independent garage noted that I should check when/if the Cambelt needs changing. Looking through all of my Caffyns Service Reports, I'm unable to see anywhere a record of if this has ever been done. Is anyone able to advise a VAG recommended cam/timing belt change interval for this model?

Thanks very much in advance.

Try their knowledge and if they know if it has a belt or a chain.

But,

they have suggested that you check so apparently they have no idea.

Vag recommend intervals of 4 years for a belt replacement or 90,000 miles, my old mk2 1.9 tdi was 10 year old and i decided to get it changed with  86,000 miles on the clock, I went the whole hog new timing  belt kit  new v belt and adjuster new  water pump and genuine vw anti-freeze coolant  a local garage did the job and charhged me £180 labour but I supplied the parts as i bought genuine parts from an online dealer, the Skoda dealer wanted nearly £500 so have a look to see if you have a bill for around £400 to £500  and that should help you out if it's been done  the garage that did my work gave me the old water pump and adjusters back along with the old belts , the old timing belt I think would have lasted another 2- 3 years quite easy but it gave me peice of mind changing it any way car went on for another 3 years but was then wriiten off by an un-insurured idiot if I rember the parts came to around  £180 for everything but dealers would not have changed the pump or v belt ot adjuster just the timing belt and those adjusters

VW Group did, until July 2023, but they maybe still do on Euro 5,s with a belt.

?

Does the OP,s 1.6 16 valve have a belt or a chain?

I am not aware if my 1.6 16V has a belt or chain driving the camshaft, but either way, there still might be a recommendation for changing it at some point. I will have a look at the links you provided and see if I can get a clue. Otherwise, I might just contact my VAG dealer in the new year and see what response I get.

It's a BTS engine with a timing chain.

Garages are liars and morons.
