Battery cold climates

Featured Replies

Does the Superb have a more powerful battery in cold climates like Finland?

I’ve been watching this https://www.youtube.com/live/LwihxyJ4V20?si=1ja_gdQev90V9ydm recently and saw a few cheeky Skodas parked in the Audi only bays all day and temperatures are silly cold, yesterday at 4pm ish it was almost -30

They got in their car and off they went, my car struggles when it’s nearly minus numbers (it is old and original from 2016)

but just wondering if they have more powerful batteries and would be a good choice even though temps never get that low here in England at least

Our 2016 OE MOL EFB battery finally gave up with a bad cell in October. Still just started unless it went to 0 or below so it sounds like the same issue.
It’s been replaced with a RAC branded Varta Silver Dynamic AGM 570 901 076 battery. Very slightly more powerful but at least it should be fine for the next few years.

That’s what I’ll be replacing mine with and is pretty much the biggest and most powerful, but I still can’t see that starting a car at almost -30.

I wonder if cars sold elsewhere have a bigger battery tray to fit bigger batteries

Scandinavia markets can have larger batteries but I'm not sure if this is typical for VAG.

It is usual to have plug-in block heaters or fuel fired heaters in very cold countries also.

However, I think you'll be surprised at the capability of the battery to start the engine at cold temperatures especially petrol with spark plugs.

Many years ago I used to spend my winters in Finland testing diesel starting at cold temperatures & we didn't fit special batteries for the tests.

I forgot about webasto etc, deffo need it there!

I think you’re right about me being surprised, think I’m too use to my own battery

I have noticed my boot mounted battery in my 2017 Passat will fit the larger 95ah 850 en battery. Has the extra screw hole also. Mine came with the small 68ah AGM battery which doesn’t sound the healthiest these days.

This is what it sounded like at 1 degree C

I can double check at some point, but if I remember correctly, my Superb has a 95ah battery, AGM. The cold crancking ability is the one which is crucial in extremely cold conditions.

I was completely off with this one. The battery on my Superb is only 68ah. I guess I confused this with my second car which does have a 95ah battery.

I believe 68ah is standard, just noticed where you live and quite surprised it’s the same

Same reference for me when I replaced mine last week!

I definitely starts better, and I'm also surprised to see how often the Stop & start system shuts down the engine, with this new battery though I had raised the minimum voltage to 8.4V instead of the original 7.6V. I think I'm gonna raise it at 9.0V at least...

I just turn the Stop/Start system off.

I have a routine in my car, start it then say “turn that fu&@“?! off” and press the stop/start button.

Then if I’m in properly standstill traffic I say something expletive and turn it back on
