Multiple lights on the dash (steering, abs, asr, handbrake, airbag)

Featured Replies

Hello everyone!

I ve read some post with similar problems but without any results.

My car is a Fabia Mk1, 2006, 1.2 petrol, BME.

When I turn the key, STEERING, ABS, ASR, HANDBRAKE AND AIRBAG lights come on.

If I start the car, the lights remain in the dash.

If I restart the engine, the lights goes off (only airbag remain on the dash).

The alternator is charging 14.4, battery is new (Exide premium), all fuses ok.

My errors scanned with a Delphy program is

18045 and 18058 (no signal Can and instrument cluster).

Can you help me with an advice?

Greetings from Romania!

Check battery clamps are both tight (making sure they are not too high on the posts and the clamps therefore 'maxxed out'. (The posts have a small taper, narrower at the top).

Can you draw in this picture where should i take a look?

Thank you!post-29123-0-05623200-1400700709.jpg.ce17543cb0187b219d9c43a70ae8b5d5.jpg

The negative clamp on the right looks OK, I think; but try moving the cable as shown by the yellow arrows, without much force. It should not move.

Then release the clip in the red square and lift the plastic cover from the positive battery post/clamp and try the same there. Take a photo of that one while the cover is up.

There might be another clip holding that cover, look for it if that one clip doesn't release it fully.

Is it me - or do parts of that battery look a little too dirty for a brand new one? E.g.. around the negative post and above the clamp-bar - that clamp bolt doesn't look like it's been moved for a while either.

You're right. There's a lot of crud around that terminal for a new one.

I think that was an example photo rather than the OP's present battery?

I spotted a VW-group part number and thought 'oh! is this a factory-fitted original battery?'

But that didn't fit with what they wrote;  so then I guessed at a borrowed or old photo.

@Cascarade please confirm, is that a photo of your new battery, or an old, or borrowed, photo?

Excuse me for the late response. This is a random photo from the internet. My battery is an Exide Premium 64 Ah. The terminals are clean and is no problem with them.

The battery with engine - 12.6 v

The alternator with engine running - 14.4

Does the battery symbol illuminate when you switch ignition on and all those other lights appear?

Yeah, the battery symbol illuminate when I turn the ignition on, and disappear when start the engine. It only flashed once a few months ago (august).

Check for corrosion on the pins of cabin fuses #1, and #16.

Random suggestion, but if you have a set of jump leads, try using one from the battery negative post to metal on the engine during a start. The battery earth terminal is only grounded via the single stud on the inner wing and a cold start would give a heavy current draw which may cause issues if there is corrosion. Due to the possibility of this issue, I fitted an extra lead from this point to the engine although corrosion in the battery to earth lead would negate any advantages.
