Rear brakes sticking.

Featured Replies

My rear brakes stick on every time I leave the car parked for a couple of days or more. On occasions it it like trying to pull away with the handbrake on then there is a bang and it is fine after that. It doesn't stick in normal use. I am concerned that if I leave it in gear with the handbrake off I risk the cambelt jumping a tooth. Has anyone any advice for me as to how to stop it sticking? BXW engine.

I take it that yu have rear drums on this car? if so you need to do a bit of work on these, the drums have to be removed firstly check that the linings are dry if they look a dark colour you might have a slight leak in the wheel cylinders easy to check just lift the rubber at the edge of the cylinder and if you get a small amount of brake fluid out they need replacing always change both sides when you do, another favourite is the handbrake lever on the brake shoe not being free and sticks this entails taking te shoes off and checking the lever and how free it moves on the shoe, sometimes a tap on a hammer head with the lever fully out frees the lever but a small spot of copper grease on the rivet where the lever is attached  can help it keep free, the last thing to check is the handbrake cable as sometimes these get sticky and cause this issue again you need to remove the shoes to check this, if it's not fee the best option is to replace the whole cable you might fee it up but it will come back and stick again it's a bit of a pain to change as you need to get right under the car to get the old one out mine took a good hard pull to remove it watch out for the rear clips that hold the cable to the control arm they can break and hard to get hold of new ones, pattern cbles are fine as genuine ones are expensive, brake shoe kits if you use bosch bonded ones they are much cheahe than the riveted shoes, have a look around some dealers do a brake shoe kit set with new cylinders shoes and springs at a discount price

You can forget all about that right now, the cambelt would have to snap or strip teeth and that's completely unheard of!

Stick it in gear with the handbrake off.

The rear drums were stripped and the brakes overhauled, by the garage that sold me the car, about 1500 miles ago and car was MOT'd less than a month ago. Time was I would pull it apart but at my age and level of disability it would require a garage job. I'll just leave it in gear and with the handbrake off when on my drive. It is pretty flat there. Thanks.

I have the same problem. I removed the ashtray covering the handbrake adjustors and one was alot looser than the other as per pic.

Is this the cam on the shoe sticking?

The auto adjusters get stuck, the handbrake levers in the drum corrode and stick.

Time to strip, clean etc the drum brakes (as they almost always get neglected, the brake dust has nowhere to go and the slave cylinders leak with age and thats not a good combination.

Probably quicker and easier to change the complete lot, last time I looked it was about £75 for a complete kit of shoes, springs and slave cylinders.

Offside slave cylinder leaks. Just have to check how to remove the brake shoes and springs.

You just push and turn the two rings on the end of the little coil springs.
