UK - Passenger side wiper arm location

Featured Replies

Hello, not too long ago I had my windscreen replaced and it’s evident my passenger wiper arm isn’t in exactly the same position as it was.

When I’m driving and got auto wipers on and it returns to the ready position (but not full seated like it’s turned off) I can see the blade against the windscreen and is annoying

I I looked at Elsawin and it’s really not clear on where it should be 😞

Can someone pleasure measure the distance between their wiper blade and the top of the plastic scuttle please?

Here’s a picture of mine, Elsawin said something about +-4mm and might be talking about the bit I’ve circled in red but not sureIMG_0149.thumb.jpeg.d5a14e1a6208d39921f03e57987c08e2.jpeg

thanks

There is a contradiction between the two statements, if you are saying that its park position on the Auto Wiper setting is different to its parked position when switched off perhaps you had not noticed the difference before?

Just move it where you like it, then move it again if it clashes with anything on full speed with a wet screen.

What I meant by the ready position is it parks up higher than where it does when the cars off

Kind of like when the cars off it sits in position A, when it’s raining and then stops the wiper arm sits in position B, turn the car off and it goes from position B to A

I think it’s out a few splines but as it’s usually a pain to remove it would be good to only do it the once

I don't know if I have understood what you are asking ,however my experience using the wipers is as follows ,

If i leave the wiper arm at zero and push down once on the arm the wipers sweep once and the passenger side arm rests out of sight. If I leave the wiper arm in position 1 (int rain wipe) and the rain triggers a wipe the wipers finish with the passenger side wiper showing about 2-3 inch showing on the windscreen. My car has original windscreen and to the best of my knowledge has always behaved like this and has never been adjusted therefore as it left the factory. If i fancy driving without seeing the stationary passenger wiper visable I simply push the wiper arm to zero and it disappears when the sweep has finished.

Hope the above makes sense?

It does to me, the OP is saying exactly the same but then deducing from it that the arm is out by several splines (it's not splined!) which does not make sense.

VAG have a feature where the wiper park position will move slightly. The idea is the wiper rubber will last longer as it's not always on the same position.

Certainly doesn't look massively out of place to me...

That’s it but mine was never that visible before

I’ve not had mine off but my old Passat was a spine so thought it would be of similar design.

Does it just sit around something and get tightened by the nut alone? If so I guess I should be able to undo the nut and move down and retighten without having to take the arm off

They are splined though.

and what the OP is saying is completely normal - when the car is off it sits in the park position. When the wipers are in auto or in other uses they will sit about an inch above this point.

Nothing to do with how the windscreen company fitted it as this is exactly how it should be :)

Does yours sit that high as in normally 3” gap when off? If so then it must be correct but can’t help but think I would have seen the wiper blade as much as I do now in the last 4 years or so

Are they a tapered spline perhaps, I have only ever loosened them, broken the taper and then rotated them to the desired position, I have never had to pull them off of the splines like previous generations with parallel shafts.

It won’t be out a “few” splines I can assure you. Remove the arm and reposition it one spline and that’ll cure the issue.

Danoid, to put your mind at rest, my wiper is sitting 3.5 to 4 inches above the scuttle while parked, even higher than yours.
however the darkened shaded part of the (original) lower screen extends 5 - 6 inches up from the base so still hides the wiper from inside when parked up.

dont think your blade is parking any higher than it should, but, maybe, the darkened portion of the lower new windscreen doesnt extend as far up so your wiper is visible??

Thanks for checking, I did insist with AutoGlass that a genuine screen must go in which eventually did after two people turning up with non genuine.

I guess it’s always been like that, just one of those things once seen cannot be unseen 😮

My wipers park at a different position each time.  Sometimes high, sometimes low.

Don't go messing with the spline.

This is from the user manual:-

"Each time the ignition switches off for the third time, the position of the windscreen wipers changes. This counteracts an early fatigue of the wiper blades."
