Skoda octavia,mk2,1.9tdi,loud engine clatter

Featured Replies

Sounds like the normal PD bucket of bolts engine noise to me.

To be fair after listening to scores of mobile phone recordings of TDi engines posted over the years they all sound like a cacophony of rattles and whilst no doubt each one is making a new and disturbing to the owner noise it never stands out from the general din.

Whilst the clatter is pretty normal I think there is a little squeal or slip noise from perhaps alternator or alternator belt. Maybe even a tension roller. No expert just my tuned ears hearing something.

Have a look at your alternator belt tensioner when the engine's running. If it's skipping all over the place, it's generally a sign you need a new alternator pulley.
