Glow Plug Help

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Hoping someone can help as getting mixed messages when reading into this.

A few months ago a friend of mine fitted 4 x RIDEX 243G0006 Glow Plugs for me in my 2015 SKODA Octavia III Combi (5E5) 2.0 TDI RS. I completely missed the fact that Glow Plug 3 has a pressure sensor inbuilt during my part research.

The car has been running fine, the occasional rough start, but I am now getting a recurring engine light with error code - PO673 (Glow plug, cylinder 3 - circuit malfunction)

A quick reset only results in the light coming back on a few restarts later. I now know that this is related to the cylinder 3 plug - probably the sensor but I wonder if there's more to it.

My question is two fold;

1 - Would I expect the EML be coming on just because there is no sensor present, or is this a fault with the plug itself?

2 - If the lack of sensor is the issue can the EML be disabled for this or should I be looking to buy a new plug with the sensor (Beru seems to be the one here from what I'm seeing)

Hello Aquai,

I appreciate that your Octavia is now about 9 years old, but I think that honestly, all of your issues would go away if you put in a decent set of OEM VAG glowplugs or at least some Bosch glowplugs.

There is already a posting on how to do this:

You are getting a circuit malfunction due to the fact that the engine ECU is expecting to do some testing on some electronics - that aren't there.  The rough running will be because the ECU is trying to keep the engine going without the feedback from the third cylinder glowplug electronics.

@varaderoguy - Thanks for the prompt reply.

Yes leaning towards that route now! Will try track down some Bosch parts.

Thanks

4 identical glow plugs fitted, but the ECU expects glow plug 3 to have an additional pressure sensor - I think you've diagnosed the problem yourself?

I believe so. My understanding is that solely replacing plug 3 with a pressure sensor fitted plug (e.g. Beru seems to be one of the only ones available) would likely solve the issue but it's probably worthwhile replacing all of them with OEM / Bosch instead of the Ridex plugs.

Hopefully I've not missed something!

I am looking at my own car now and I do not see that any of them have the sensor, Octavia Vrs 2.0 2015. All over YouTube shows that 1 out of 4 is pressure sensor, but I check mine and they all look same.

Did you have any other type of connection for number 3 or are they all the same long plug?

Thanks
