Trying to put a rocker switch in place near the cigarette socket to disconnect the socket from always live, but can't seem to get hold of the wires to put in a switch. Does anyone have any advice how to get to the socket wires easliy, or remove the cigarette lighter or do I need a specific tool?

I put a twin usb socket in place of cigarette lighter. I loosened the screw for rear console remove cup holder cover. You can then lift up slightly and you should be able to push the socket up and remove to access the wiring. This was on my son's mk 2 monte carlo.
