Second Hand Car - Never been Update (Infotainment systems - 1803)

Featured Replies

Hi,

Sorry for My English, I'm Belgian and it's my first Post.

I recently purchased a second hand MK-IV from 2021.

The Infotainment systems seem sometines Slow and Buggy (reboot and freeze), After checking Firmware Version and ater reading some posts here, I saw it's possible tu update the car by myself.

1)It's it possible to update in one step From 1803 to 1941 ?

2)Is my car hardware supporting the lastest 1941 version ?

3) What the difference between these two firmware ?

Thanks a lot,

You need to do this in two steps and requires a visit to a dealer to do it.

You may need a different module fitted as well for it to take.

So the firmware need to go to IIRC 1896 first and then it can do a jump from there to 1941.

No need for a different module. Mine was just updated a few weeks ago from 1788 to 1896 and then to 1941. System is running a bit more smooth, a bit faster. No issues afterwards.

I thought that it needed a new module or am I getting confused 😕...

Oh well take TheUltraRunners advice, but you have to do it 2 stages though

Hmmm mine was done in 1h 45. So I really doubt that in this time they managed also to replace the module. Since each update takes about 45 min.

But yes, it needs to be done in two stages. Since versions before 1896 can't get any new big updates over the air.

Isn't the new module requirement related to the "SOS call pop! pop! visit workshop" error the OP may not have noticed yet?

I think so, however they don't seem to be replacing the SOS modules anymore and are applying new firmware to them that have made them stable.  I had SOS firmware updated in November 2023 which sorted out the SOS module constantly crashing and then another newer firmware update applied to it only this week for complete stability.

The OP should hopefully still be within the manufacturers 3 year warranty so my advise is get the car booked in at the dealership ASAP and get in the Infotainment updated to version 1941 and also get the SOS module firmware updated to the latest version.  Once this is done the difference is night and day, I went from the Infotainment / SOS system being terrible to it being pretty much rock solid.

Hi all,

I'm also on version1803. From a different thread, I've found the download files for 1941, but does anyone know where I can find downloads for earlier updates to apply? I've searched everywhere but can't find any earlier updates to apply.

I'm out of warranty (bought the car second hand, and the previous owner hadn't applied any updates), and I want to minimise how much I need to spend on the car to sort out the infotainment. I have the SOS issues which I’m going to have to pay for separately as it is.

I don't know where or whether you even can download the earlier files, so just take it to a dealer and unfortunately you're going to have to pay them to do it, but the flipside is that if they screw it up then they have to pay for it to be corrected/replaced/repaired.

I was worried that might be the case

Well put it like this it'll probably cost you £100, if you attempt it and it goes wrong you're probably looking at £1000 to replace it. Unless of course you can find a independant VW/Skoda garage who can do it for you, then you may get it done cheaper.

Haha, if only it was £100...I’ve just spent £430 on a new second key because it only came with one key from the garage I bought it from.

When I last spoke to the main dealer, they estimated it needed 3 updates and they quoted £150 to perform each update. And that’s on top of needing to have the car to first diagnose the SOS fault, before they can do anything about it. Even though it seems quite well documented and common across the Skoda range.

Hi guys!

I also bought a second hand Skoda with exactly same versions like on the picture in the post above. My main issue that my mobile can't connect wireless, even that phone recognize the car and see that can be connected to android auto wireless. Will the update fix this issue?

It doesn't cost £150 per update.

It costs about £150 Inc VAT for diagnostics, you may get a charge for the update of software of which there should be two, one to take you into the next level which can then allow them to update to 1941/1969. So just two updates and each update takes about 15 or 20 mins to do.

I'm literally basing it on what the local main dealer said to me when I enquired. But every experience with that dealership has been a pain in the neck (but that's a different story) so I'll likely look around elsewhere.

Well you can always see if an independent skoda/vw garage will do it for you at a lower price.

Hi,

You don’t mention if your mobile is Android or iOS.

Early versions didn’t support wireless AndroidAuto, later one do.

iOS should work wirelessly with older infotainment versions.

You right! I use Android device, Sony Xperia 5iii. It looks in Android Auto app that wireless should work. It also worked for me with another car i rented abroad (VW T-roc 2023)

I had a similar issue at first too.

I found that after I'd initially connected to the car with a USB cable and started using Android Auto with a wired connection, it would automatically connect wirelessly after that.

It's not the way it should work, or how the on screen instructions tell you to set it up...but it worked for me twice! (I did a system reset and had to do it all over again)

I tried to connect it with USB, and it worked just until I removed the cable. Once cable removed, android auto icon near the phone name in mobile devices becomes grey and the car doesn't recognize the phone as android auto device any more😕

What firmware version of the car head unit do you have?

It did the same with me, I would unplug it, and try to set it up the normal way.... without success. Got frustrated, locked the car up and left it for the day, but the next time I used it, it was working wirelessly.

I've taken a photo of my software set up, 1803...buggy as hell, but Android Auto is working wirelessly...

Great that it worked for you! What mobile device do you have? I tried with 2 devices, my Sony Xperia and my wife's Samsung A33. In both cases I got same result. This is why I suspect that car firmware is an issue

I've got 1803 on mine and usually Android Auto works fine with my Pixel 8 and has from when we got the car (second hand) a few months ago. I do find that all the wireless options vanish occasionally, so I can't connect with bluetooth or Android Auto, and my wife, who has a Motorola G50, has more problems with the infotainment system crashing.

The car is going in for an upgrade of the infotainment system and navigation database (which refuses to update from 20.3) in early October under warranty, so it will be interesting to see whether that will fix the connection problems.

  • 2 weeks later...

I just found the post on one of the Russian forums, with the steps performed to update multimedia from 1803 to 1941. According to the author, it was made in one procedure, via technician menu of the head unit, that allows update from USB. Took around 40 minutes.

Does anybody here performed such update this way?

I think that you need to read through the threads and then make a decision whether you can do it or not.

If in doubt get a dealer to do it and that way if it goes awry they're responsible for the cost of replacing or repairing it, rather than you.
