Semi Automatic / DSG / Steptronic ....... gearstick indications / actions

Featured Replies

I had owned and driven my DSG equipped Octavia mk2 since 2011, so thirteen years.

I used the semi auto (push forward + for up shifts & pull back - for down shifts) on occasion, particularly if driving where speed humps are prevalent.

So I am really struggling to get it into my head (both to use it or even why they did it this way) why the steptronic + & - controls are the opposite way around.

Anyone agree that it is illogical to push gearshifter forwards to downshift and back to upshift.

And that bmw decided to put the lit indicator, which is basically a minus sign, right next to the unlit + upshift sign.

Not looking for anyone slating bmw but what are other manufacturers semi auto controls like. Are there any others that are the same orientation as bmw's???

Thanks

Several other threads on this, one in the performance section in the past weeks.  It is what it is and as I drive both DSG and BMW s I prefer DSG,s.  Comes natural to me how they operate.

I think the exact opposite - push forwards to downshift allows the momentum when braking to assist you changing down gears, and pulling backwards to upshift means acceleration works with up when changing up gears. My Toyota Aygo worked this way, and I wish my Octavia 3 DSG did also.

Sadly the nom I had numerous DSGs, the rather poor 6 speed wet DSG and the good in my experience, others have had very bad experiences, the 7 speed dry clutch box which I had in twin charge and probably my favourite Skoda of the dozen I had the mark 2 1.8 TSI L&K with the 7k red line that was so quick, 160 hp my arse, 0-60 in a nidge over 7s, still pulling well at 135 mph.

7 speed Renault DSG the same gear stick layout but lack tiptronic sideways but then one uses the paddles.  3 seconds on the right up shift paddle to switch from auto to manual change, happy days for max acceleration. Just peaved Mercs and other markets get the 160hp instead of the 140 hp I have to settle for. Will chip to 180 hp I gather but it wheel spins now so not too much point, needs better tyres than the Kuhmos it was fitted in Korea with.  Love the gearbox but like the DSG it does getting excited after a spirited run and takes so time to settle back to relaxed driving. Damn the learnt driving feature.

My 6 speed wet DSG behaved without fault for the thirteen years that I had it, and I drove it pretty hard.

And I never had the box serviced ....

@Rooted I will look at the other topic you mention ...... and you were definitely right about the noisy tyres / road noise / lack of sound insulation / suspension, or whatever causes the rumble on rough road surfaces.

my wife's arona has a 7speed dsg (dont which one i dont know)

and ive used the manual mode a few times, but I feel like its upside down.. push forward for an upshift and pull back for down shift just feels wrong. it feels like pushing forward on an aircraft yoke to gain altitude would - wrong...

Personally I use manual for Down shifts. Decelerating, off the accelerator or ready dropping a gear to boot it and get a move on. I knock back across to D and let it do upshifts.  And with a DQ200 like the Arona has then actually if you boot it hard in manual 2,3,4 etc and don't shift up you might find the box does anyway to save revving it's nuts off.      Then there is being in D.  If you want to slow down drop the shifter back to S.  Or if you want to boot it and not kick down. Back to S, it comes down a gear and boot it, you might even get a double kick down.  But then with a DQ200 and just 115 ps or less maybe wasting your time.  A 150, 180 or 192 ps does move a bit quicker.
