Help please .Oil on passenger drive shaft

Featured Replies

Changed my coil spring yesterday. Went to take it a test drive and the wheel felt like it was going to wobble off.

Straight back home and checked everything was tight and it was.

Noticed oil coming from inner boot on my passenger drive shaft

Can anyone tell me what I've done wrong ? Any help would be much appreciated

Is it engine oil, gearbox oil?

A would say its gearbox oil

Did you pull the driveshaft out a bit and damage the seal?

Assume it's a manual, not dsg.

Does it look like it's been leaking for a while, lots of oil around and you've only just noticed?

Driveshafts ok, CV joints not worn? How many miles on the car?

Can't help with the wobbling.

As far as leaking gearbox oil goes, you should get the car up in the air on a ramp, both wheels hanging free.. Then check for end play at the gearbox output flanges which is probably where the oil is leaking.

Best if you are under the car, grab the drive shafts either side and twist in opposite directions. If you see the Flanges moving in/out the box then one or both output bearings are shot and seals have been pushed out and so the leak.

Solution is to remove gearbox, strip and replace bearings and seals. If allowed to go on a long while further internal damage may be present especially if gearbox oil level has been too low or the side play is excessive.

The classic symptom is a clunk when going on/off throttle, that is the diff moving sideways inside the final drive

To do that you need to explain what you actually did, what parts you removed, what parts remained in place driveshaft for instance whether you struggled with any refitting and had to resort to force, getting the strut back in the steering knuckle springs to mind.

If the job went smoothly and you did it in the prescribed manner I cant see any connection with a transmission oil leak.

Far more of concern is the wobbling like a loose wheel, did you correctly tighten the hub nut if you pulled the steering knuckle from the driveshaft? Obvious question did you correctly tighten the wheel nuts?

Thanks for your replies. IEnded up driving it with ease to a local mechanic. Turns out it was just watered down cv grease and the wobble was because the drive shaft had popped out on the inside. School boy errors . Appreciate the replies

Watered down cv grease??? 2 things - cv grease is contained in that boot, it shouldn’t leak out if it at all.
And it should not be full of water, this indicates a failed boot and if water is in there, the grease can’t do its job.

The driveshaft is a solid bar with a connection to each cv joint and then to hub/gearbox. The one place it can’t pop out is in the middle?

There was a hole in the cv witch is where the grease was coming. It was like oil consistency not grease. I don't know if I've explained it well but I'll add a picture of where failed. Had failed in the blue part and had excessive play when he rocked the drive shaft back n forth. New drive shaft and cars completely fine
