Engine Oil Query

survey

Recommended Posts

late 2022 SEL Auto 1.5tsi. First service yesterday. Car is set for Variable servicing.  Dealer invoice shows he used Castrol SLX111 longlife engine oil. This I believe is to VW 508. I expected him to use 0-20 VW509 oil. Although Skoda say 507 0r 508 can be used, should I get the dealer to drain this oil and use VW509 0-20?  As the car is on variable service I am somewhat concerned! I have put the query to Skoda Customer services who couldnt even locate my car on their system (as my personal [plate was put on the car a year or so ago. They have now passed the query to their technical dept so it will probably be lost somewhere!

Ok. An update here.  It turns out that the dealer had designated the oil as SLX111 longlife on the invoice and told me as I left the dealership that the oil was 05w-30. However I emailed him and he now says that if he said it was 05w-30 he was mistaken and that the oil should have been designated as 0w-20 and is known as Castrol 508 to the dealership, bought in bulk.

Garage said this had never been queried in the past but assured me it IS the correct 0w-20.

I can only hope that what he has said is correct. I generally always take my own oil for any car service; this one was a freebie by the dealer for previous mess ups!

0w 20 FS IV is   VW508 00 / 509 00.    The correct oil for your car on Fixed or Variable servicing.    VW508    TSI,s.  VW 509 TDI,s even if on Fixed Servicing.

VW504 00 / 507 00 was not the correct oil.    0w 30 FS III or 5w 30 FS III     VW504 TSI,  VW507 TDI,s.

Thanks Rooted. Yes, sorry should have said VW508 and not mentioned 509. The service guy I have been dealing with does seem to be genuine and came quickly back to me after I let him know what Castrol had said to me. Unfortunately a great deal of the info I have had from sales and service staff has been proved incorrect; just wish they don't know, they should say so!

I had this on our 1 litre SEAT Ateca - dealer was adamant that on fixed interval servicing they use VW504 and if I wanted VW508 I'd have to pay extra for it as that was "longlife" oil.   He even showed me the service print-off that the technicians work from and that said VW504.

When I showed him an email I had from SEAT stating VW508 should be used regardless he scuttled off and came back and said that the technician had used VW508.  Yeah right.

In practice it's an emissions thing more than anything else - they use super-thin oil so the emissions are lower.    I'm still old school, and the Ateca does a lot of miles, so in my head I feel using thicker 5W30 can't be a bad thing.  I always top it up with 5W30 anyway.

For VW Group though, bearing in mind the emissions tribulations they've had. it's pretty bad if their dealers are breaking the emissions spec by using the wrong oil.

If not doing long life service intervals / oil changes there is VW502 00.

Why they should mention using VW504 00 / 507 00 for fixed is simply because Skoda shows nothing about Fixed Service Intervals from the time of the WLTP and them going VW508 00 / 509 00.
