Removing number plate adhesive

Recommended Posts

New to us MkIII Fabia used to be on private plate. There is black adhesive/tape/paper sticking out one side of the numberplate - presumably the old plate was bigger and it's residue that's been left behind.

What's the best way of removing it without damaging the paint? Have tried soaking it (as best I can, it's on a vertical surface) with some bird muck/tar remover which hasn't touched it. It's always worked well on stubborn stuff before, but guess I've not come across something this stubborn before!

Many thanks in advance.

I use WD40 or even vegetable oil. You need something that will take the sticky away. Then finish off with fairy liquid and water to remove what's left.

I'd try white spirit to remove the glue, then Isopropyl (70%) to remove the white spirit.

Tried more tar remover, wd40, isopropyl.... But nothing would really seem to touch it.

Sunny day, an old credit card and a bit more bravery has pretty much done it! Hopefully the rest of the stuff had helped soften it 😂 was lucky with the weather, was waiting to get a hair drier on it as next step but in the end didn't need too.

Thanks all
