Android Auto/Smart Link

Featured Replies

If you've got an Amundsen/Discover Media MIB2 unit it can be enabled for free. VCDS/OBD11, sd card and MIB2 Toolbox are all that are needed. Check out Mr Fix on youtube - he's got loads of videos explaining things.

But you still need an OBD2 programmer? Or is a reader enough?

I bought one of the ubercheap eBay fixes, which enabled Smartlink, but not androidauto or Carplay as promised (got a refund so fair enough). Haven't got around to the OBD2 yet.

You need VCDS/OBD11 to enable a setting in the infotainment unit that displays the Green Engineering Mode ( GEM for short ). Then once the GEM is activated you can see and use the MIB2 Toolbox which you install and run from the sd card.

Furthermore, it seems to me as if the ubercheap ebay fix did in fact work but you failed to enable the extra 2 settings that you were asked to perform using VCDS/OBD11. So yours is already activated. As I stated earlier in this thread have a look at the mr fix videos on youtube. This is the one that applies to your situation:

Many thanks! I don't have OBD11/VCDS, but will investigate further!

So I splashed out £83 on an OBDeleven NextGen Pro which arrived today. Needed the Pro to enable the adaptations I think.

10 mins and Androidauto is working (and Carplay) - many thanks for the video link above @bigade1, much appreciated!

Only seems to work when phone is plugged in with a USB cable, not Bluetooth, but wasn't really expecting BT to work.

Now I have another year of messing around to see what else I can change (or not...). The OBDeleven app seems good, quite impressed with what it does!

SmartLink is cable only. For wireless you need to buy another adapter such as AAWireless, currently £69.99 on Amazon.

I can recommend this as your phone connects without issues.

Cable is fine, don't want to spend any more!

Where did you get it from? Amazon UK?

Direct from their site with a discount code.

Thanks to all in this thread for their contributions, Android Auto is now up and running.

The OBD Eleven Pro was a bit ponderous, requiring patience, but both AA and Apple CP were activated relatively easily.

My previous experiences of AA were such that Google Maps appeared instantly the phone was connected via the USB port. In the Octavia I guess the car's version of AA was older and doesn't override the phone's USB settings.  I had to select "File Transfer/Android Auto" manually from the phone's USB options for full access.

Hi guys, I would like to enable smart link in my octavia's 15 reg, been reading all threads in this topic and it looks like it can be done. Just updated the infotainment software thanks to pab567.

Just thought to try my luck asking if I am nearer to some fellow member who got obd to enable the so called green engineering mode. I am in North London, wouldn't mind a 1h- 1.30h drive.

Thank you

It depends on whether yours is an early 2015 build or a late one, early builds have a MIB1 infotainment system which doesn't support CarPlay or Android Auto - my previous 15 reg Octavia had a MIB1 - later 2015 builds have a MIB2 which does support CarPlay and Android Auto.

It is built mid 2015, not sure exactly what month, but I am definitely sure it run an MIB2.

Tried a different USB cable? Some are power only.

Tried few.. Even the one wich worrked before.. Everything atarted after updating the mib. Maybe there was kind of license wich was void?

Maybe the firmware update has scrambled the FEC code that unlocks AndroidAuto?

Was AA unlocked by a dealer applying the correct unlock code, or by someone else doing a 'hack'?

If a hack then it's possible the firmware update has caused the hack to be lost - which is why I haven't updated my MIB2 as I had CarPlay unlocked by the 'hack' method.

Check your phone's USB settings - I had a similar issue.   Changing the USB setting to "Use USB for File Transfer/Android Auto" sorted it for me.
