AWD Differences between Scout & VRS & 4x4

Featured Replies

I own a Skoda Octavia 2 Facelift from 2009, Hatchback FWD which I wish to swap into 4x4 to make it more suitable for off-roading. I know the cheap, easy, fast and logical approach would be to buy one that already has 4x4 but my mind is still stuck on swapping the one my family had for years.

Reading this forum, from what I understand the swap is possible by just swapping parts such as the gearbox, rear suspension, diesel tank etc... but I can't find a comparison between the 4x4 systems present on the O2, if there is any difference. I know that the 4x4 was found in the Scout, VRS as well as some normal models, but no idea if there's actually any difference between them and I'd like some clarification from anyone familiar with it. Thank you!

I can't speak from experience of working on the mechanics (although I have my second O2 4x4) but the parts catalogue page for gearboxes for a 2009 O2 is HERE, and a little navigation will lead you to the other catalogue pages for the rest of the vehicle.

From my understanding the 4-wheel drive system is triggered by monitoring the front wheels for slippage via the ABS system, in which case you would need to be looking at wheel sensors, ABS controller, plus wiring.  I suspect there will be a 4x4 controller but I haven't looked.

I know there are others on the forum who have converted mk1 Octys to 4wd so those posts may be helpful starting points.

To my understanding you also need to replace the "transmission" tunnel so it will accept a propeller shaft and rear floor from just ahead of the front mounds for the rear suspension on an FWD car. It really is easier to buy a car fitted with a Haldex system.

I don't think there are any 4x4 hatchbacks on this generation 🤔

Nope...   All estates.

TBH you really would be better starting with a haldex equipped model and then tuning or converting that.
