did I understand correctly that the radar for cruise is directly above the number plate in the grill? Has anyone fitted an aux light there and if so, did it interfere with the radar?

This is the other option, with the second one being underneath the plate, between 2 parking sensors in the grill.

 

No, the lights aren't good enough as-is. Better than the Xenons on the Superb? Slightly, but there's still not enough flood.
