AC/Heating Issue

Featured Replies

Hello All,

Hope to find some answers here. My 2007 Skoda Scout is throwing me some temperature issues. I am in Spain so the weather is getting quite hot at the moment.

  • The other day I was driving and the AC just would not cool down. It was blowing enough air but it didn't matter the temperature setting it would just not blow any cold air. Unfortunately it is not the first time that it has happened, although it happens intermittently.

  • Also, last christmas the heating wouldn't heat. I was driving cross country, 2/3C outside and the heating just didn't work. Again 22c?, something like that. This is the only time I experienced this one, but of course, Barcelona doesn't need that much heating.

  • Finally, when these issues happen the central vents above my screen would be blowing close to no air. Don't know if this is directly or indirectly related, or is the result of mounting issues.

I would think that the issue is thermostat going bad but wanted to run it by you lot before heading to the garage.

As always, many thanks!

@kris_kristofferson Does your car have an outside temperature display? If so, does that work properly? It has effects on climate control output.

Thanks for your answer!

The outside temp display works perfectly. Yes

When did you last have the A/C checked? Lack of refrigerant creeps up on you without you noticing until a really hot day.

Thanks

Actually did have a leak in a valve last year so had the refrigerant topped up and valve replaced. Also, wouldn't explain the heating issue, only cooling.

I did not comment on that problem but one situation is that the nylon gear or motor on the mixer flap has failed. The output air temperature consists of a mix of cold air from the A/C and hot from the heater matrix. If you know how (use google) then by pressing three A/C buttons (which vary by model) you can read out out on the Climatronic displays all the data from sensors etc.

Another sign of a failed motor/stripped nylon gear on one of the air direction flaps. Failed flaps usually produce a fault code but not always.

As an aside I recommend keeping the A/C on all year round as it will condense out the water vapour on humid days when it is raining (and clears window misting fast). It not like the old bang-bang systems so additional fuel consumption is tiny outside of hot days. Humidity control does not work near freezing conditions but humidy is low anyway when cold outside.

Thanks for the reply!

It happened again recently. Also, when the outside temperature is high (+23C) the AC fails to cool the cabin properly. So I bit the bullet and had the car looked over by the Mechanic which turned a faulty compressor. But expensive of a repair but I don't want to let go of the Octi just yet.

Thanks again!

@kris_kristofferson as per @pikpilot above, leaving the a/c on all year keeps the cabin more pleasant, and improves the reliability of the system. I don't know about in Spain, but in the UK you can get a/c service from specialists for way less than a garage will charge (odds on the garage will send the car to the specialist and then charge the specialist price plus a percentage).
