Octavia iV VRS estate exhaust tips

Featured Replies

New to Octavia and was wondering how to remove the exhaust tips that are in the rear bumper, I know they are not part of the exhauat on one side just a fake tip. I want to remove them and spray them black to blend in a bit more.

Any info would be helpful

This is the part I am on about.

It's fairly easy, 4 x T25 screws (or T30, it was a while ago) holding each side in.

I ended up taking out all that size screw holding the lower section of the rear bumper out - just to make more room to wiggle the tips out.

Reason for taking them out was to get them powder coated black.

Thanks for the info. Will have a go at getting these off

I've thought of doing this myself as I've always thought black would look better with the other trim. It may be a stupid question but would it need to be a special paint or would it be better just to get them powder coated?

I did my Golf R tips and used high temp spray paint and not had a problem. That was 3 years ago.

Just key yhe.a bit with wet and dry then primer and a couple of coats of black.

The facelift has gloss black exhaust trims. Not a fan myself but possibly they are just the same shape as the current chrome ones so could be a direct swap?

There are two factory versions:

For TSI:

For TDI:

I could be remembering wrong, but I think the TDI has a special heat treatment to prevent the finish from failing.

Could the two versions be because the petrol has an exhaust pipe each side (Like the Golf GTi) whereas the diesel has both on the same side (Like the Golf GTD) so one exhaust trim is fake?

Looking at the photos again, you could be right. They've got different shaped openings on the exhaust side.

I also can't find mention of a special heat treatment - but I thought it released back to the heat produced from the diesel particulate filter regeneration process In saying that, the whole reason we have these semi-fake exhaust is because the heat produced during DPF/PPF regeneration could melt the bumper.

Admittedly, It doesn't apply to my RS as Australia delivered models have the older Gen 3 EA888 engine whereas the rest of the world gets the Gen 4 EA888 Evo with a petrol particulate filter.

350 euros buys you a lot of paint!

I took mine off and had them powder coated by my local wheel refurber, £30 each. Personally I think they look better. Taking them off was fiddly but just two torx screws on each side, you need to take the rest of the torx screws across the back off too to get access, you'll see what I mean when you look under. If you can jack up the rear slightly that really helps. In the picture above, the top 2 brackets push into slots  in the exhaust surround and the bottom 2 have the screws. From memory it took about 30 mins to take both off.

I'm not sure how well this shows the black. I also tinted the reflector strip (please don't tell me about legalities, I'll live with them if there are any)

I was under the impression this style trim is just the “in thing” with car designers over the last few years rather than being to stop melting/damaging the bumper.

Take a look at the back end of the Golf GTi and GTD they both have normal exhausts without a fake trim. (Petrol single pipe each side and diesel double pipe one side) and are the same engines as the vRS.
