Brakes - Confirm sizes / Places to buy

Featured Replies

Hi All.

I need to get my rear discs and pads replaced and to be honest, the front's won't be far behind.

I'm currently in the process of finding a tame mechanic who will fit parts I purchase as opposed to making a little on the parts as well as the labour.

I have a:

January 2018 Petrol vRS 230.

For this vehicle I believe that I need:

Front Discs - 340 x 30
Rear Discs - 310 x 22

Obviously pads to fit.

So I pop along to Euro Car Parts - pop in my Reg, it confirms the model and displays me some potential discs. Numerous makes, numerous prices.

However, when I'm clicking on them, some are 253mm, some 272mm and only one (Audura - not a brand I'm familiar with)  is actually 310mm

I do the same for the front discs, 4 different makes shown yet only one, the ATE brand, is actually in the 340mm size I need.

Are there any websites where you select your car and it ONLY shows you the parts that fit? Or are they all like this - showing a range of potentials and I need to do the digging around to find the right ones?

I can see ATE are recommended by many, I'm seeing Bembo, Pagid and Bosch being offered at a premium. Is there still a general like for ATE or are people recommending others these days?

Actually - looking around at stock, and actually what is appearing in searches in the correct size, it might well be "buy what you can, as there isn't that much choice".

What you need are the PR codes that define your front and rear brake versions. Armed with those, most website descriptions should be relatively easy to define as go/no go.

Message me with your VIN if you'd like me to offer these.

I had the same issue when buying from Autodoc recently, even with cross referencing part numbers. Alot of what it said would fit was wrong when checking specs. I settled on ATE rust resistant discs front and rear and TRW pads, cost me £300 delivered which I thought was good considering. I did check Euro's and ECP but wasnt happy with knowing they were correct.

I've read too many posts saying cheap Brembo arnt worth touching which Euros/ECP supply alot of. I wouldnt buy cheap or unknown discs either. The other option is going to a local TPS that supply VAG parts, some will serve to the public, some are trade only.

FYI if the rears are solid they are 272mm, if they are vented they will be 310mm. I am pretty sure all facelift cars have 310mm except the 245 which has larger again I believe?

If you decide to change the brakes yourself, when you do the rears its alot easier to whip out the rear shock absorbers to get good leverage to undo the triple square bolts that hold the caliper carriers on. Overall, it was a relatively easy job considering mine were 5 years old/45k on them.

These brakes are tricky, brembo has 2 sizes for the 2014 vrs.

The difference is that they are referenced for red or normal caliper 🤷🏾‍♂️

I ended up charging theme at the dealer's

Yes, it is tricky. Had the same problem when it came to the family Fabia. Trying to find the correct brakes and pads was hardwork. There are multiple variations and VAG has a habit of changing components mid-production cycle. With patience and careful checking, it is possible to get the correct parts from Euro Car Parts.

Thank you BP - so I now have some PR codes.

Which......seems to tell me that I actually have 272mm Rear discs and not 310mm which I thought I had.

It shouldn't be this confusing :)

Cheers all.

No problem. The 310's are vented discs, so should be relatively easy to differentiate from the solid 272's, as mentioned above by @Dooge

Both Jurid and Ferodo on autodoc list the Octavia MK3 2.0TSI 230HP as having 272x10mm rear brake discs. Most of the other brands seem quite clueless about what rear brakes fit this car.

However, it's always best to check the car's build codes just in case Skoda fitted 310x22mm rear brake discs to some of the 230HP cars.

Cheers all.

Very solid discs on the rear - so must be the 272's.
