2.0TDI 4x4 DSG problems

Featured Replies

I have a 2019 2.0tdi 4x4 SEL with DQ381 DSG, 34k miles. Recently, I have been having problems with gear changes. Initially if you drove fairly sedately there would be a definite hesitation between 2nd and 3rd. Drive a bit harder, or use kick down things were much worse.

I did a scan with vcds and two clutch faults were logged.

10895 - Clutch 1
          P1898 00 [00101100] - Function Restriction

10896 - Clutch 2
          P1899 00 [00101000] - Function Restriction

I cleared the faults a did a dsg reset.

Drove the next day and things had not improved. In fact I was parked face down on a slope and couldn't reverse off. Couldn't go forward so had to be towed off. Once back on level ground the car would go into reverse again with a loud clunk. Scanned the car again and got the following.

10726 - Gear Selector 2
          P176B 00 [00101000] - Cannot be Regulated

10896 - Clutch 2
          P1899 00 [00101100] - Function Restriction

The first fault  has the time stamp of not going into reverse.

Managed to drive home and spoke to my local indy. He asked me to send him the scans and he would have a look and advise. Not heard anything back yet. He also advised me not to drive it.

I'm struggling to understand if this is a clutch or mechatronic fault. I think a faulty mechatronic would be the cheaper option to repair. There is a good video on YT that shows you how to remove it and send it off to a company for test and rebuild. I think that is something I could cope with. Of course pointless if it's a clutch fault.

Any advice or experiences will be greatly appreciated.

With 34k miles and faults being thrown up from both clutch packs I'd side with a mechatronic issue.

But nothing's every 100% until investigated.

I previously had a 2013 2.0 TDI Touran (from new) with 6 spd DSG wet clutch (DQ250) , had the DSG oil and filter changed every 35,000 miles,  at 108,000 miles still operated perfectly, and I towed a 1.5 ton trailer quite a bit. I've not had my Karoq, which replaced the Touran, long enough to need a DQ381 oil change. However some faults with the DQ250 DSG boxes could be resolved with the oil and filter change. I realise that the DQ381 is a different box, but one of the reasons for the DQ250 oil change is because the oil collects the dust off the clutch plates. I've seen oil change intervals of 40k and 80k miles for the DQ381. At 34k miles your Karoq is approaching the 40K mark, an oil change is around £200 considerably less that the cost to have the Mechatroinic unit replaced. Worth considering?

Sadly the reports of premature failures with DQ381,s MCU,s is becoming common and not just on this forum.

An oil & filter change is unlikely to resolve anything.

Those without issues with DQ381,s might be best to consider getting it serviced correctly well before the 80,000 mile recommendation, guidelines, advice or schedule given by VW / Skoda.

Anyone getting quoted around £200 for the Oil & Filter change of a DQ381 DSG needs to ask themselves and the people quoting that if they know what they are doing and have not only the gear but more than just an idea. (on what they are doing.)

Thanks all for the replies.

To update this thread, yesterday I decided I would take off the mechatronic unit to send away for testing/rebuild.

As I jacked up the car I noticed a massive oil leak. Upon investigation found that it was leaking from the dsg oil filter housing. It was very loose and needed about four turns to tighten it. I have ordered a dsg service kit. Oil, filter and seal, and two drain plugs. The car is staying on the axle stands until I can do the oil and filter change, hopefully on Friday.

The car is now five years old and done 34k miles. I mistakenly thought the dsg service was due at four years or 40k miles. This was done by my indy garage last year (April 2023). It had its annual service this year (April 2024) and having  spoken to the indy garage he assured me they would have spotted any oil leaks this time round.

I can only assume the filter housing wasn't tightened up properly fourteen months but how has it taken this long to show problems.

Here's hoping the dsg service by me fixes all the problems.

@Ootoherethanks for posting the chart and link to the other thread. Interesting that there are different fluid requirements.

@tfsparkhope your DSG issues are resolved by the service kit. It’s interesting that the kit includes the filter but only fluid is mentioned in schedule posted by Ootohere.

I did the dsg oil filter and oil change yesterday. There was just under two litres of oil left in the gearbox! I suspect I lost the bulk of it on my last journey home. (around five miles).

Took it for a drive and all seems well. There was a drip or two of oil on my return but I suspect (hope!) that is the residual oil from the leak that I couldn't get to. The sound deadening material on the under tray was saturated but I got out as much of it as I could. Needless to say I'll keep a close eye on it for the next few days.

I have attached the latest? dsg service manual. I hope someone finds it useful.

Looking at lots of different 'how tos' there seems to be confusion regarding the overflow pipe. According to the attached manual to achieve the correct oil level, if the pipe is beige you unscrew it two turns. When the oil stops running out you tighten it up again. If it's red you don't need to. Mine is red.

Here's hoping............

@tfsparkthat looks promising, fingers crossed it’s the solution. Roughly how much was the service kit?  I know I mentioned circa £200 previously which @Ootoherequeried, it was based on what I had paid the local VW dealer (parts and labour) for each of the three services on the DQ250 in my Touran. I’m thinking that I will have the DQ381 in Karoq serviced around the 30k miles.

The service kit I used was from Ebay and it cost £86.95.

It consisted of 6L of Millers DSG oil, a Febi Bilstein oil filter with seal and two sump plugs with washers.

I'm probably going to get shot down in flames for not using genuine VAG components but it's a chance I've taken.

As it is the VW Group / Skoda buy in the consumables, they do not manufacture / produce them.

DQ250 servicing is not quite as involved as doing the DQ381.
