Mk4 or mk3.5

Featured Replies

I had a 2014 Mk3 diesel vRS, this was written off by another driver while I was stationary. Replaced it with a 2019 Mk3.5 1.5 petrol SE L, this has just been written off by an American tourist who ignored a Give Way sign. I know, I'm just a lucky guy...

Question is, do I replace it with a more recent mk3.5 or get a Mk4? I have read a lot of comments about the infotainment system problems and other electrical gremlins with the early (2020 - 2021?) Mk4s, have these been resolved with 2022 and onwards versions?

I would say go for a Mk4. I reckon they are a much nicer 'place to be' and more fuel efficient. The infotainment system gremlins are by and large fixed particularly with v1941 or 1969 which has sorted the repeated system restarts.

Yes, there were a lot of issue with s/ware modules in earlier cars (2020/21) which ought to be fixed by now but have been told by a local dealer sales guy that there are some out there which haven't yet. If you do go for an early Mk4 vehicle I suggest going through a main dealer and ensure that all the fixes are applied and get assurance in writing that they'll do any which arise.

Things to look out for include KPH/MPH settings (speedo & satnav), ACC thinking you're driving on the right (and preventing overtaking instead of undertaking), SOS module popping noise, road sign recognition reading as Km not miles), flickering fuel and temperature gauges.

The early SE and SE First Edition cars had the smaller 8" infotainment screen, 'standard' cruise control and no SatNav so were not impacted by those issues. In fact, whilst mine was being investigated & fixed I had a 2020 SE FE on loan which was trouble free for the 8.5k miles I had it. During that time (5 months) I very nearly rejected my SEL FE to keep the loan car - very pleased I didn't as now it's fixed it is a lovely car.

Hi guys, i dont want to start the same topic but i have the same dillema here, mk3 or mk4.

I'm an ex owner of 2015 estate RS TDI DSG Stage1 and was more then pleased for 8 years with everything.
Now I'm thinking should I go for mk3 fl estate with 50-80k km or 2021-2022 mk4 rs tsi hatch with 50-60k km(with at least 1year warranty).

For the last few weeks been reading all the www that i could find and watched ytb review so i have more and more dillema is mk4 good decision.

Got 2 small kids and mk3 boot was never full.
Even done meter messurement of floor in mk3 est and mk4 hatch and boot floor is the same, maybe even bigger in mk4 so it seems there are no downsides of the boot.

Although, rear seat leg-knee room in mk4 according to the post is smaller?is that true? i'm 6feet tall.

The infotainment is (of course) the 2nd part of this post (or maybe most important part), did the latest update fixed all the problems, especially the bugs with driving assistance problems, sos calls and so on?I find it bit funny that after 5years owners are still talking about it even the mk4.5 came up few months ago.

I'm a bit "petrolhead", so dont wanna any enhangement of the assistance in driving(lane assist in mk3 in 8years was always off).

can you in 3click turn off lane/front assistance and i supose it has sound for traffic limit speed?

In the future stage1,2,3 is the way to go and suspension upgrade and so on...brakes in my old mk3(stock 340mm front) were perfect, never faded.

Done some homework on ytb and 100-200 times mk3&mk4 are similar, even is20 vs garrett, even mk4 has some more hp with stage1.

in mk4 i really miss dsg shifter for manual mode...
This vehicle would be more like weekend car and for traveling purposes.

Good thing is that i have ok relationship with skoda official guys, so everything that factory sorted it up i should not have problem with official service area.

Also, custom tuner support is excellent.
I would like your opinion in comparison these 2 cars in genneraly (building quality, headlights, brakes, engine, suspension,...)
so, fire it away and thank you 😀

Just my comment about the manual mode. YOu still have manual mode. You just engage it with pressing on of the paddle shifters on the steering wheel. And when you will do stage 1 (or 2 or 3), I believe you can also get a full manual mode (no auto up-shifting or auto kick-down).

Yep, i understand this,it is the same like mk3,but if you're driving around the city and turning wheel in more then 180° where are the paddles?😅

Another question in list: shift by wire works fine?

I don't see a lot of use of manual shifting in the city. ;) But you can buy some decent extensions which make such shifting easier.

Shift by wire works fine. Didn't notice any issues with it.

I would go for the Mk4, a much nicer car and, in general, more fuel efficient too (though I guess if you're looking at the RS version, then drivability and handling will be your priority). Having good relationships with your local Škoda service area offers reassurance should any infotainment issues arise; the latest versions fixed them, and the seller ought to have them installed already.

Rear space if OK, I am taller than you (6 feet 4 inches) and regularly drive long distances with 4 adults in the car. Mine is the estate version - lots of space in the boot 👍

I admit to not knowing that much about the mark 3 but these days I’d tend to go for the 4 it is so much more modern. EA888 engines don’t go forever without work (plastic water pumps etc..) so lower mileage is a factor too. From watching YouTube videos it does appear that the software problems were finally fixed sometime during the model cycle so assuming everything is up to date that shouldn’t be the issue it once was?

in case you haven’t seen it this guy provides a very dry but interesting comparison between a 3 and a 4
